How do you deal with trash?
I used to have this outdoors area where I would dump trash, but lately the raids and manhunter packs ar getting too larg, and thus it fills up rather quickly:

I'm thinking about setting up a burning chamber of sorts, but before doing anything I wanted to see how other people deal with this to look for better alternatives.

Very easy to do since it has it's own research project to get it, but it's completely invaluable.

can also use a molotov, is less work for your pawns
just need to switch from wood walls to stone and that room can burn just fine

There's actually a simpler way to do it that can be done without tech: digging graves.

You can find graves in the miscellaneous tab. They take no materials to make and take up 2 tiles.

Another option, also found in the miscellaneous tab, is the sarcophagus. It uses 60 material of either wood, stone or steel. It takes up 2 tiles and gives a small 24 hour mood boost. What I really like about these things is that you can use them in place of sandbags. They give a slightly smaller cover bonus but are way more durable than sandbags and the stone ones cannot burn. An added bonus is that if you use them as sandbags the dead bodies are often nearby so it makes for quick and efficient trash removal.

Usually all you need, but keep in mind some traits, like bloodlust, don't mind wearing deadman's apparel at all, so you might want to hold onto the better pieces. Stuff like power armor, helms, and vests, can also sell for a reasonable amount even mostly destroyed and with a D. Have to decide if it's worth creating a stockpile for them to get a few hundred extra silver now and then.

How does that solve anything? Graves take up twice as much space as corpses lying on the ground, so if you are struggling with space now then doubling the space requirement will make things worse.
More importantly, graves are permanent so eventually you are gonna have to burn the corpses (or abandon the map I guess) so why not get started early?

They are not permanent. You can deconstruct them whenever you like. It's a great early game solution for getting rid of the bodies. If you find that later you have need of that spot where the grave is, simply deconstruct it and place the body elsewhere.

but that still leaves the body
graves are just a less efficient way of having a corpse room like he already has
dont even get a mood penalty from seeing them if the corpse room has a door or T split to stop the vieuw
it does nothing, just delay the problem
after 5 years your entire map is a mass grave

What I do is I set up a second colony with just psychopaths and cannibals. I strip the corpses on my map (and keep what's useful), then I haul the corpses to a freezer where they'll await being drop podded to the second colony, where I butcher them. The second colony lives off the the meat, and I send the human leather back the main colony where I either sell it as human leather or as human leather dusters.

You wind up with little to no trash, and a significant profit.

Another option is when you have a lot of corpse eating animals. Bulid a corpse freezer in an animal area and let them take care of the bodies for you. However it will cause your pawns to become distressed when entering. Which can be fixed by having the aminals haul bodies in there for you and fetch them. Using the priorites for storage areas of course.

Please don't waste time and resources researching and building a crematorium. Instead just pile it up and once a month set it on fire, much simpler and cheaper.
Emmote Dec 17, 2017 @ 5:24am
The reason I prefer the Crematorium is that I always have at least a few dedicated haulers on my map, so the cremating will always get done quickly. Not only that, but once you've set it up, you never have to worry about it again. It gets done automatically. Having to burn down a room or stockpile of rubbish every so often is just annoying micro.

I just put a stockpile outside my colony's walls, and let the junk rot. After awhile, everything rots away. No fuss.

Takes too long when you start getting large raids and the stockpile has to be massive.
