Forced Clothing
What does this actually mean? I keep putting out decent clothes yet I always have to make them put it on. Is that it? and do they hate having to wear forced clothes?

That just means you commanded a colonist to wear something, and they won't exchange it for anything better unless you say so. Click the "Assign" tab on the bottom of the screen and you can choose what colonists should wear or create specific outfits to assign to them.

You'll also get a forced to wear debuff. It's better to go into the "Assign tab" And set what to wear and what quality and wear % to replace.

Colonists have a mind of their own and sometimes have weird clothing preferences. If you ensure you have clothes available, you should not worry too much about what they wear.

They will change apparel on their own, sometimes after doing other chores or eating/rest/joy/whatever. They typically replace things once they get below 60-75% worn.

You really do want to go into the Assign tab and redesign their attire settings. By default, they'll be running around in parkas and tuques in summer

This doesn't exist.

It exists for pawns who have nudity etc preferences. You can force them to wear clothes to prevent them from freezing in winter etc.

My bad I wasn't clear.

I find they drop parkas in high heat if there's an alternative available. If only jackets available are parkas, then they wear parkas.

It's a good idea to use custom settings as wearing anything is not allways good. Parkas esp. since they have a damned 20% work penatly and are not needed except in really cold weather.

Likewise, tribalwear is easily accessible and solves the problem of warmth without a work penalty, but it's not possible to wear armor vests with tribalwear. Also a good way to prevent pawns from wearing crappy vests and complaining about it.

That's a debuff related to nudists, called 'Constraining clothes'. It happens when nudists wear any item of clothing that isn't headgear, and isn't related to the issue of forcing colonists to wear items.

As IxianMace references above, it has nothing to do with forced. If you don't specifically set your nudist pawn to the nudist clothes assignment, they will put on clothes as well. If you don't want them to get the constraining clothes debuff, you must do this.

The main point of all these posts:

You need to learn and use the "Assign" window for clothing. Once you are manufacturing clothing, or getting enough via stripping dead raiders, you will want to make sure you are also setting the minimum % of HP of the clothing high enough in a custom clothing outfit so that they stop getting the "worn out" and "tattered" clothing debuffs. Forget exactly where those % cutoffs are, but I think they may be at like 50% and 30% of HP of the clothing.

Note also, the original quality (i.e. poor, shoddy, superior, etc.) of the clothing has nothing to do with those tattered, worn out debuffs, only the HP %.
xlockeed Nov 5, 2016 @ 11:33am
49% triggers warning of worn out / tattered. So set hp to 50% so you never have to hear that DING every time clothing hits worn apparel.

Pawns will replace clothes on their own long before an item reaches 50%. I've witnessed 75% masterwork pants replaced by poor 100% ones.

If you set their minimum to 50% they will indeed not wear worn clothes but if you have no replacement, all it does is ensure you get unhappy or cold colonists. Make a few extra apparel items of each type you want them to wear and don't fiddle with the "assign" tab too much is my advice.

Until you can manufacture armor you will have to live with worn/tattered mood debuffs (50/20 % respectively). Or would you rather they not wear armor at all? Even 19% armor is better than nothing.

Assign pawns to jobs they like, cook fine or lavish meals and build large or pretty enviroments and comfortable furniture to boost morale. Some penalties are either unaviodable or not worth fighting *too* hard.

There's a mod called Outfitter (or something similar) which makes them a lot smarter in their 'natural' clothing choices. It allows them to account for things like skill bonuses/penalties, armour value, temperature sensitivity and so forth, as well as quality and damage. You may still need to force them sometimes, but it does allow them to dress themselves a bit more sensibly without supervision.

Hmm, ok, I guess the last time I played was prior to the new clothes assignment mechanics (waiting on A16 for a renewed look).

Working on outdated information, so ignore my comment.
