Anyway, resting improves immunity gain rate by a bit, and it's better if they're in a bed or bedroll instead of the ground, better yet with a hospital bed (the one you have to research) and best with a hospital bed with a vitals monitor attached.
Also old people and people with lowered blood filtration will gain immunity slower as well.
Not for immunity gain. The quality of the bed influences rest effectiveness and surgery success chance, but not immunity.
You should keep them in bed for the entirety of their recovery time. The recovery time is incredibly long. Expect to be tending them for ~9 days with non-stop bed rest.
Even with poor tending quality, as long as your colonists rest in bed for the entirety of the sickness they won't die. Untreated severity growth is 0.5/hour, with treatment it goes as low as 0.2/hour. A healthy colonist resting in bed will gain immunity at ~0.45/hour. So just don't leave them untended. =)
