Should I use "Prepare Carefully" Mod?
Heya

I'd like to play Rimworld but every time I try, I find I'm not enjoying myself

The problem is with the starting characters

I want the starting characters to be very specific

In vanilla, you just randomise a bunch until you get what you want. However, this has taken me hours to find the exact character I'd like.

The alternative is to use the Prepare Carefully mod. However, whenever I use the mod, I feel like creating characters is cheating and ruins the experience.

It's a lose lose situation and being depressed doesn't help either lol

What should I do? Keep randomising? If not, how can I use the mod without it ruining the experience of having random characters?

Someone help ;w;

To be honest, if you just use the mod for creating your own characters without too many buffs....then it is minimal cheating. On nano level... ^ ^

But how do I tell if they're too strong or not if they're not randomised? It still feels like cheating

there is a mod called random plus that allows you to set parameters that automatically hits random until something within your specifications shows up. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1434137894&searchtext=random+plus

If it feels like cheating to you and you don't enjoy that - don't do it. If you'd enjoy the cheat more than your current experience, do it. The mod enables you to set a point limit, but the customization still allows for....advantages

I suggest not using the mod. Or using the randomize button. One of the more interesting ways to play Rimworld is by selecting a random site and random pawns, and seeing if you can survive with what RNG gave you :)

If you find yourself constantly randomizing to get a decent starting roster, then yeah just use prepare carefully. There's an option when configuring your characters to enable a point system that helps keep you from accidentaly starting off too strong.

But I would only really use it to make sure you have the base essentials to help get off the ground. Someone with a little cooking skill, one with a little medic, at least one who can fight.

But I find the best use for it is to create characters as close to me and my friends for a more engaging run.

I used it to make 2 psychopath cannibals who enjoy their life in the jungle smoking, drinking beer and eating escape pod people. A third dude joined and he was also a psychopath lol.
stat wise i made them both abit above average but nothing OP.

Try it, if you want specific you can do them however you want! :)

If you're looking for specifics, you could always just randomize their skill lvls and then set specific traits/backstories. That's what I normally do, so I don't feel like I'm "cheating" too much. lol. I also use EDB to change their hairstyle, body style and head style. I'm pretty picky with my starting character(s) since the rest of the recruits are completely random. I've spent way too much hours at the reroll screen and it gets really tiresome after your 10th+ restart.

I say you should at least try EDB out and see for yourself whether or not you like it.

Edit: Also, once you find/create character(s) that you like, you could save them to use for future games, which is awesome.

Pay attention to the points in the upper right. Notice how many your team starts with. If you don't exceed that total number, or don't exceed some reasonable number (maybe roll a few (FEW) teams and see what the highest randomly-generated amount you get), maybe that won't feel like cheating.

It is a great mod. #1 most popular, but yeah, easy to get carried away, so limit yourself.
I mean I like making teams of 3 all bionic guys but playing on super hard difficulty etc. fun being able to run around and do stuff with advanced guys but you can’t get carried away

My friend used it to try and make characters based on our circle of friends. Each pawn was named after us and was designed to reflect our personalities and talents. It doesn't have to be for cheating.

Brand new to the game? I would 100% go NO mods. That way you can get a feel for how the game was intended to be played. And when you finally pick up a mod, you'll see exactly what it changes.
