Note: you may need to make sure you have set your "maximum # of colonies" to above the default setting of 1 in the options. Like the storyteller and difficulty setting you can change that on the fly, no need to worry if you hadn't done that before starting the current game.
Although creating a new settlement can solve the problem, while caravaning you can transfer worn items (clothing and weapons) to the caravans ITEM list, then transfer the item to a particular pawn. In the hypothemia case, you could have transfered a few clothing items from all the pawns to keep the rescued prisoner from getting hypothemia. A major PITA to keep swapping clothes back and forth but in theory it could work ... :/
Hind sight can help and researching transport pods before venturing out has always been a must for me. If you expect extra company from your quest it's good to bring an extra set of clothing/armor/weapons/food etc.
I do wish we had an emergency stop (similar to the camping mod), with the caveat that the caravan can still be "encountered" (events can still happen) whilst sitting around.
