@vurt, i agree. This new trend in the industry is disturbing. If a game is complete, its not alpha. It used to be an alpha was a proof of concept and the engine was bare bones. Beta was a much more filled out engine but still full of bugs. When it was "done", additional things added were updates and content packs. Now games are released in "beta" and the first 6 months are all the updates that make the game work the way it should have before the official release (look at any game from a major publisher in the last 5 years. Day one updates that make the game work. Mass effect, starwars battlefront, battle field, any AAA fps, ect...).
As far as this game being "complete but still alpha", i think it fits into the current framework of the industry. Its alpha in the sense that the engine is still bare bones and there is so much more that is intended to be added. Its also complete in the sense it works exactly as it should, all the major bugs(pretty much ALL bugs) have been ironed out.
@pit defender: tynan has said the game was completed. Yet the game is still in alpha. Thats a contradiction, no matter how you look at it or twist it. Granted, this game is a complete alpha. Its 100% playable now, but its still got a long way to go before its fully realized its potential, thus the alpha tag.
I think Tynan was just being honest with the tags he attatched to this game. Even if they are contradictory at first glance.
Yeah its how Early Acces evolved, I dont think its something we should complain about, it gives devs time to relax spread funds better and create larger more fun games. Ofcourse there are failed projects or ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ taking advantage of situiation but you can probably say that about any situaition that has alot of good coming from it. Lets look at the bright side of life xD And bringing that up in a very succesful project like this one is just plain beaching :P
Like i said, the engine is complete, but not all the features are added. So its a complete alpha. As long as he keeps addimg stuff, he wont remove the alpha tag. Once he is done adding, then he will release it as a "complete game" and probably never touch it again.
Im guessing, but with my experience and my observations watching many EA titles fall by the wayside and be forgotten by their developers, id say its a conservative guess even.
As for multiplayer, not in our lifetime lol. This game would only be able to support deathmatch style mp. Imagine playing the sims with MP. It wouldnt work. There are just too many very serious problems that couldnt be addressed without destroying established concepts that are part of the engine with this game being given mp. It would change the dynamic so much it would no longer be rimworld.
Dont get me wrong, a deathmatch style 4 player free for all on a large map with structures and a locked camera on your pawn would be amazing. Other then that, i cant see it working.
If anyone has any experience with video game development, you'll know that no game is ever complete, especially if the game development process takes years.
Lots of game content gets cut/changed/added before release and the game that gets released is either good or fails.
I can understand that during the development of a game, lots of ideas are created, and those ideas can change the game, but you don't want to stray too far from what you set out to make, which is a nasty cycle to get caught in.
