how my colony was killed by two guinea pigs

I sent my best shooter on one of the first quest you get. I had him bring some meds in case he got hurt. well he was a slow poke but the threat was just two guinea pigs so I was like meh. well anyways it started me on the map very close to them so I only managed to get two shots off before they closed the gap and he was only skill 5 in melee so he took a lot of bites before he killed them. no problem I thought just use some meds....he was incapable of medic....FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF so he dies on the way home and then his dog goes crazy and kills my other two colonist because of bad rng.

Long story short make sure you remember what your colonist are incapable of.

A comedy of errors. I love it!
The small manhunters are easy to underestimate. Melee weapons help a lot, but they sure love going for the eyes even so.

I always wait until I can safely bring 3 colonists out on caravan (Maybe 2 colonists if it seems really important).

I just like to think that in rim world part of the lore is that some kind of event happened that made all animals telipathic or something to explain how they know when their master dies even when they are across the world.

With combat extended I seem to win many more engagements with animals (melee).

When the caravan system was first released, I created a test caravan of one colonist and a few trade items etc. Ambushed by a manhunting hare.... Whoops, the colonist is pacifist!
