How often do you move your colonies?
I often just stick around with one colony and work on building up the ship technology instead of going to the crashed ship. How often do you guys move your entire colonies? And if you do it, do you have any tips on what's the easiest way to do it?

I'm currently moving my colony of 3 pawns and 3 Dinos from Dinosauria that can carry lot of weight. I packed 7 turrets and batteries (Chemfuel generator could be better option) some berserker lances and many food.

Not very often, although I do from time to time... perhaps once every couple of colony playthroughs. Usually, it's because I've either started on a very steel/plasteel poor map or I've found a map tile that suits me better.
That's one of the key points... always scout your neighbouring tiles (particularly useful for creating a 2nd mining settlement) and if travelling long distance, then scout the landing sites.
I say landing sites because I always travel by Transport pod. It's the fastest way to move goods, animals and people. The maximum range of a fully fuelled pod is huge!
Note the white border which marks the range ;)

Take some chemfuel with you and you can keep jumping by building more pods and launchers at the landing sites. This makes moving from one side of the map very quick and easy. No need to wait for caravans to plod on foot ;)

As soon as the oil runs out.

In fact, I need a colony on the planet to mine oil, make fuel and send it to a spaceship. So - often, enough, but it depends on raids, disasters and the total intensity of oil production.

EDIT
The most convenient way is to build a small transport spaceship and use it to transport everything you need from the old base to a new one.
PS If you play vanilla you do not need move in mid/late game. What for?

Never. Except, of course, if I play nomadic style / run for the landed spaceship.

I do make short second bases sometimes for the extra resources but never abandon the base I started with.

If I don't like the map at start, I simply restart.
If I lose the colony due to the event, I consider the colony a "loss" and restart.

In my current game I’ve lost two colonies to infestations, so I’ve moved twice, starting over with the survivors.

Voluntarily though? Never. Building up a base is a lot of time and effort. Running out of resources certainly wouldn’t justify a move, there’s always trading and the long range scanner to get more.

Because you do not need to be constrained to the start tile you chose. Your start tile does not have to be your end tile ;)
By exploring the various terrains and biomes around you, you may well find your ideal map tile.
Crashland > survive> reconnaissance > move > settle
And then there's the spaceship at the other end of the world if you choose that option to end the game. Your starting base will be simply a foundation to launch transport pods in succession to reach the goal tile and there, build your final base.

Yes, that's true, however, building mining camps in neighbouring tiles are an additional source for productivity. I settle mine these long before I have deep drilling up and running. And quite often, that reveals better locations for a base and I have not found it difficult to transfer everything to the new location and build my main base there instead.
By better, I mean more flat open space, more growing areas, roads, rivers or whatever else I like.

In easy mode, I start with a random tile, but if we talk about ideal map tile... then I don’t need to search - the best biomes in the game are deserts and glaciers. All the rest are the same.
But in any case, you talked about the beginning of the game, and this did not contradict my statement above.

As for the quest with the spaceship for the vanilla finale, you know better. I haven’t seen the vanilla parts of the spaceship since alpha.

I've never tried actually using transport pods and haven't really ever branched out from my main colony. It's just hard for me to want to rebuild after building everything up from scratch but I supposed once I have enough research done it wouldn't be too hard to build back up. I might try going for the ship one of these days.
