Randy random on first playthrough?
I'm somewhat new to this game, and am decently far into my first playthrough, and was wondering if changing my storyteller to randy random from cassandra classic is a good idea for a beginner like me. i mean, i don't exactly want mechanoid ships crashing in the middle of my colony, but i hate the way cassandra classic increases difficulty over time. what's the best decision in this situation?

Randy is, effectively, more difficult than Cassandra just because he will happily drop pod mechanoids in to the middle of your colony whenever he feels like it. So it's fine, go for it. Worst case scenario if you really don't enjoy Randy you can switch your storyteller again in the options menu.

personally i prefer randy, the steady increases from the other 2 annoy me as well. there is always the chance of the mech raids early on, but they still scale to wealth and its equally likely that instead of the mech raid you'll get cargo pods of food.

Randy Random is by far the easiest storyteller on account of how balanced he is in terms of good versus bad events to send your way (being weighted equally), while both Cass and Phoebe will heavily favor the bad events. Keep in mind Randy will potentially send stronger bad events than you're used to, or weaker. He might also send them more frequently... or maybe you'll only see a raid once per year.

Long story short, it's up to you. Cass and Phoebe are more stable, but Randy can, if you're lucky, be the nicest of the bunch.

Wait, Phoebe Chillax favors dropping bad events on you?

Randy is probably the easiest to deal with. Phoebe can easily lull you to a false sense of security so when she hits, she hits harder than you think you can handle. Cassandra is like a time limit since she'll keep ramping up till you "win" or die.

Randy is the one true god that rewards you or tests you.

Yeah, Randy is easier than Cassie and Phoebe.

With Cassie and Phoebe, you're GUARANTEED to have bad things happen.

With Randy, it's 50/50.

From my experience with Phoebe, almost nothing happens at all, but when they do, it'll usually be bad than good.

switched to randy, no major differences, in fact, i've been getting much less raids and more positive events

from what i've seen phoebe likes to save all the bad events for later and dish em all out at once

in time you will look back on this and realize this is the trigger event for your colony's downfall:steamhappy:

Insightful conclusion here!

For a beginner, I would recommend regular, which is Cassandra. Randy can jump all over the place, Cass is more predictable and steady.

I almost refunded the game at the beginning, but then I tried Randy and never looked back.

Randy is the only storyteller who doesn't care about you and as such, doesn't force ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ rules on events that aren't connected (Like two different groups who don't know that the other is here raiding at the same time)
Randy doesn't give magical protection against sunflares when you have the flu. Because the sun doesn't know that a random human on a random planet has the flu right now and can't deal with a sunflare.

Also, cassandra is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ that shot down at least two of my naket brutalltry starts with Doomsday Rocketlaunchers in the 2th raid.

I had a loincloth and a shortbow and was living in a cave. Yes that is RocketlauncherS, pural.

Randy is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ insane. Working on my first playthrough with him, enjoying the hell out of it, but have never seen the craziness that he can bring before with the other two. As an example:

Tribal Sappers come in, clear those. As I'm finishing up getting everyone healed another tribal sapper group comes in, move to take them out, and a pirate raid comes in to join them. Ends up in a three-way firefight due to the spawn points. As that's getting finished up, a Siege team comes in to join the party almost immediately followed by a Tribal raid. Luckily, the tribals spawned near the siege team and hit them about 5 seconds after they called their pods in to construct.

Have never enjoyed a playthrough as much as I am with this one, and have never seen the insanity ramp up so quickly. The night I got attacked by 54 Manhunting Hares and lost 1 arm and 2 legs was quite amusing. Luckily, I already had weird stuff like this happen so I have a bionic limb stockpile now.

Will NEVER go back to another storyteller again. Randy is just that awesome.

Yeah, once on randy i had big endgame pirate raid, and when gunfire started, mechanoid drop pods full of centipedes arrived in the middle of battlefield and started attacking both sides. Then my main soldier got hit by heart attack. Hahah that was hiliarious.
