Do not finish the research project ... Just research enough of everything to a point where you can bull rush the last few points in a day or two when you're ready to upgrade.
BTW, researching shouldn't increase your difficulty. You are gaining knowledge but if you don't use it then you won't increase your richness. Yeah, you can make a cool sword, just don't make it.
a "modern" human has at least a basic understanding why a rifle shoots a bullet, while a tribal start with the thought of it beeing magic and doesn't have this basic understanding, because of that, new technology costs way more than for other starts

Yeah good shout. Was sort of thinking that as I was posting the question but there's a few nice suggestions here so it was definitely worth asking
Or, if you're willing to steer a little away from vanilla experience, try out "medieval times", which expands on medieval tech and thus adds more to research before the electricity.
