Slow down research?
I like to start in New Tribe mode and build from there, quite often on Naked Brutality mode.
Even then, I find a decent researcher can get me to medieval and beyond a little bit too easily.
Is there a way to modify a scenario to make research maybe 10x more points needed per tech?

at the start you can modify the research speed modifier in the scenario editor

if you wanna slow down the progression in your game i suggest a mod called techblock if you arent already using it

I play Tribal and I know how you feel, so I have one suggestion ...

Do not finish the research project ... Just research enough of everything to a point where you can bull rush the last few points in a day or two when you're ready to upgrade.

BTW, researching shouldn't increase your difficulty. You are gaining knowledge but if you don't use it then you won't increase your richness. Yeah, you can make a cool sword, just don't make it.

you start as a tribal, that means that your tech level is "locked" to tribel tech. at some point, new tech is industrial or higher, (i don't remember how many steps there are), once they are above your tech level, it gets harder to research them (100% increased cost)
a "modern" human has at least a basic understanding why a rifle shoots a bullet, while a tribal start with the thought of it beeing magic and doesn't have this basic understanding, because of that, new technology costs way more than for other starts

Yeah good shout. Was sort of thinking that as I was posting the question but there's a few nice suggestions here so it was definitely worth asking

You could try out "clueless" mod that removes all already researched tech.
Or, if you're willing to steer a little away from vanilla experience, try out "medieval times", which expands on medieval tech and thus adds more to research before the electricity.
