Before going to the caravan dialog, you should -
- Make sure the colonist leaving aren't sleepy or hungry. They'll interrupt packing for food, and will pass out if they're too sleepy.
- Send the pack animals who are going to a small zone, where they can wait to be tagged.
When the caravan starts, colonists tag all the animals going, and then head for the caravan packing point (which I assume you've designated). They will then "wander" until all colonists and animals are within a minimum distance of the starting point.
Next they enter "gathering supplies" mode. They'll pick stuff up and put it on the nearest pack animal.
When "gathering supplies" is done, they'll start wandering again. This continues until all colonists have finished "gathering supplies." If the caravan looks like it's stuck, examine each of the caravan colonists in turn. At least one should still be "gathering supplies."
Once all colonists finish gathering supplies, they switch to "moving," and head for an exit point on the edge of the map.
I did have a problem when the animals started sleeping after they get "packed" for the caravan.
1) make the caravan too heavy (anything the extra pawns are carrying can’t go in the caravan) or
2) let them move out of the base, or you’ll have to split the caravan, and that’s a fustercluck waiting to happen.
