However, if you want to challenge yourself, play on a swamp. You're forced to use multiple buildings, often with awkward shapes and layouts. (at leats until you get moisture pump, and that's slow).
Usually two or three blocks of bedrooms, 3 per block, with a separate kitchen and dining room in the middle. Giant freezer attached to the kitchen, to make food prep easier and faster.
Then I make a separate building for 2 prison cells and 2 hospital rooms (into mountains if I can).
One large building with all my research/crafting stations tied into a large storage area.
Dear god, I need a life. :P
My last base was all mountain but I got tired of the bugs showing up in the middle of it, so now I'm going 50/50 open area to mountain
