Usually keep stations that require lots of ingredients [drug labs] on one side to make things line up more smoothly.
Keep a research bench at the back of the room along with the comm station.
Much like other people have said though; it also depends on how vanilla your game is as plenty of mods add extra workbenches.
Think fire, think safe ;)
You can fit six workstations that are 3x2 each in the middle of the room and have them all connected to two tool cabinets.
Chairs go where people will stand/sit to work at their workstations, and there is a 1-tile gap between the walls and the workstations/chairs.
Normally if it's a room where people tend to be for longer periods of time i tend to place stools in the storage area since they can help remove any ugliness from items laying on the floor.
Though keep in mind that the nicer the stool and the more you have of them, the bigger your worth becomes and the harder the raids.
