Visitors traders. Ship chunks. It is a bit tricky to maintain a healthy stack at the beginning. But most traders or visitors have a couple

Mechs also drop some when dissasembled. If you are forced to mine, mine in such a way that you get a visual on all the surfaces, mining in a line every 3'rd block should do this.

A good way to save energy on heaters/coolers is to do double thick walls. I normally do this on the outer walls and in the freezer. Also if you have a big temperatur difference between 2 rooms, making an airlock can help minimize the exchange.

I have this in effect to a bit, my freezer is double walled and has an airlock and i had to convert to campfires rather than heaters, with airlocks on all the doors to the outside, is there a best material to insulate or does it make no difference?

A layer of doors on the inside should do the trick. It's a "feature" in A15 and due to how it's programmed should make for the perfect insulation.
There is another "deature" to heating, make a 1x1 room with a heater and then vent it into where you want. You can then crank it up as much as you like and it can pretty much heat most of your base. Can be done with coolers aswell.

Try not to spend to many components, save up untill you get 30, then make a component assembly bench.
