What is this games obsession with fire!?
I can appreciate it being an aspect, and needing to protect your settlement, but I'm averaging one lightening storm per day, sometimes two or three per day, which means CONSTANT fires. They aren't getting into the base because I have protected everything there, but it's kind of hard to cut trees and harvest crops when 75% of the map constantly burns down.

Is it a region thing? Will I have lightening storms in the desert or the rain forest?
This is becoming rage inducing. I'm about to throw my computer out the window. :P

Learn how to rain dance ;)
Seriously though, take a moment to ponder the problem and if it's that important to you, then come up with a solution.
Why not grow trees inside your base? That way it won't matter if the whole map burns, your trees will remain intact.

I'm glad you mentioned that.
I thought I could grow stuff inside the base, but then I'd need to remove the roof (until I get to hydroponics) but won't the lightening still set fires to the crops with no roof to stop it?
And I've noticed the fires are also taking out my wiring which of course stretches from my power plants to the building.

Upon further study, it's not thunderstorms, it's flash storms. Obviously areas that get more rain get more thunderstorms (my settlement gets A LOT of rain), but does that have anything to do with flash storms?

Lol, youre not the only one.

It's plain silly imho -- if you ignore the fires on farm because it's winter and you've stocked enough, it will strike a furniture and if you ignore that, it will hit an animal, and if you still ignore that, the lightning will now strike your pawns. Lol .... one word: Inane. My solution:

I can't say I've noticed certain map types having more flashstorms than others, but I haven't paid much attention. I've certainly never had one to three a day - maybe a mod interaction? That being said, if flashstorms really bug you...
- You can disable them in the scenario editor the next time you start a game (doesn't really help the current map).
- Build more firebreaks, or you might consider placing stone walls on top of your power lines. Firebreaks I believe need to be three wide on each side.
- If you're REALLY that angry, you can enable the dev tools and manually trigger rain anytime you see a flashstorm event.

I'm not so much angry as annoyed.
I just started a new map that gets very little rain and so far no storms, knock on wood.

You can turn them off in the scenario editor when starting a new game.

Build with stone. Make concrete fire breaks around base. Seperate crops with rock walls. Firefoam if you extra paranoid.

(related: take out your batteries and use geothermal to prevent even more fire)

Also thats a lot more lightning that normal. It can happen, but should come way less on average.

Yes it is a region thing...eg not many fire storms on ice sheet.

However, if your base is safe and then you still have worries for your farms and tree farms, it just means, put stone walls around them also.

Try salting the earth in a radius around and between tree groves. Alternatively, build non-flammable pathways to block the fire's expansion, or settle in an area like a desert. Deserts can be fun to settle in if you have oases, fish, water mills, tents, and heat-resistant clothing. Fires and blight generally won't do as much to affect you, and if you manage to make a refrigeration room, you'll be able to mark out a stable existence there. The better you do, the more predatory animals the game will send your way. Defeating these provides meat and leather, which you can sell to passing traders, or use in luxury meals.

If you’re getting flash storms every day you’ve definitely got some kind of conflict with mods or if you’re in plain vanilla it’s gotta be a bug. You should get a couple per season tops.

It could also be settlement location. Certain areas get tons of rainfall every year.

This is it.
I started a new colony in an area with much less rain and going into my 3rd summer I've yet to have a single flash storm.
