What you want to use depends on where you are. Leathers and climate are hand in hand stuff, whereas things like thrumbofur are vastly more "all round better" than others, but ultimately it depends on what you need at the time.
Cold biomes? Don't use reptile leather.
Hot biomes? The opposite.
There's no "this is the right answer" possible here since it depends on too many things. Availability is also another matter entirely, since some areas have a complete lack of fauna whose leather / fur would be worth using.
Temperate or Arid, Arid is what im on now. and I have 9 various leathers kicking around.
But in the forest biomes, ive often had the entire screen from top to bottom only showing the various leathers in merchants lists for stuff to sell, its super annoying to manage all those in a stock pile, when the pawns NEVER prioritize keeping stacks topped off, so its like you need a 40 x 40 stock pile just for your leather in a forest biome when you have enough pawns that your needing to exterminate the whole wild life just to barely maintain your food stocks.
The ones I ALWAYS consider special ONLY, are, elephant, chinchilla, thumbro, rhino, fox, guinea, heavy, and human, then for cloth, the speicals to me are syn, devil, hyper.
the ones i dident list, i have always just sold in bulk for silver, or just let those be used willy nilly in any cloths order.
Now Im curious if i should be making patch with those instead of just assorted crafting allow.
I've never made patchleather. But then I'm a hoarder and don't mind large amounts of various leathers in 187 stacks. I'll happily keep 32 pigskin around for a year until another wild boar appears on the map and I have enough to make something with it.
