What does the world population slider do?
Does it simply generate more faction settlements, or does it also increase the frequency of raids, trade caravans, quests, etc.?

Even if you're on 300th day with literally Silver tiles and Plasteel walls. If you destroy all walls and floors, burn&sell all your stuff, kill all colonists and leave one, kill all animals. The next raid will most likely include only one raider. Same for visitors, at big wealth you will get around 8 to 15 visitors (non-caravan) and only 1/2 for a starter colony.

This means world population has no effect on raider numbers but on faction settlements.

I see, so it only benefits the player, by making travel time shorter on average?
Most likely. But by the way this also means more Enemy Bases, since you have more enemies at start (2 Tribals, 1 Roguh Outlander and 1 Pirate), this might be a bit of a challange to deal with.
