Colonist has a shattered spine -- fixable?
It turns out that charge rifles sting like a ♥♥♥♥♥. One shot shattered the spine of my best crafter. Is this fixable, or should I just start digging the grave already?

It's repairable. Luciferium (be careful), Bionic Spine (late game crafting or trade), or an item that can't quite recall the name of that will heal one item as a reward for doing a favor for another colony.

Healer mech serum. It's extremely rare, but consumables exist to be used, and if you have no way to get bionic spines anytime soon, now seems to be the moment. Be careful that it heals exactly one ailment, so if your colonist gets a minor case of heatstroke at the same time for any reason, you might heal the heatstroke instead of the spine.
Honestly at that point either save scum or dev mode in another serum
That reduces movement a lot right?

I'd say focus them on doing jobs that don't require a lot of movement.

-Crafting, Art, Cleaning, Research, and Defending the Base.

So, while it may be difficult to fix, I find there's always a use for someone.. even if they're not that capable it's always good for at least something rather than no one.
Nope, they can be organ farms, warg kibble, and shooting dummies.

You can also kill them & revive them with revival serum.

Shattered spine *completely* incapacitates them.

After months of training, trading and research, my colonist has been healed!

The easiest would probably be to get the EPOE mod. I like it a lot as it offers you different levels of prosthetics all around the mid, late and ultralate game, linked to research. Comes with its own Merchant Ship as well. Do check it out, its decently vanilla-ish made and doesnt impact the gameplay toooo much
