Town or compound?
I personally prefer building a town.

Fret not.

Soon I shall build 3 more spaceships.
Not because they are needed, simply because I can barely see with both my eyes twitching.

The symmetry must be maintained.
Always.

It basically is the standard setup, a wall surrounding the settlement along with a maze with a killbox at the end of it.

Without symmetry the eye twitching starts.

My eye started twitching because of that single square room at the bottom of your base.
And the red bit is SO off-center! how can he live with himself?!?

I tend to build different building with a 2 block distance of each other, but in late stages i usually put up a roof and make some doors, it ends up like a complex I guess.

I only build towns in early-game with wood while my diggers and constructors are mining my true base.
Once I get IED incendiary traps I put one in every room along with wood furniture, everyone moves in and deconstruct the initial base.

Safest way to build a moutain base and avoid infestation ^^

Town with walls or a mountain base

Compounds. Eventually I have so many colonists even the fields start getting roofed over so I can grow year round and avoid toxic fallout. I tend to stop playing when there is an economic/food collapse and the colony is about 2 days from pulling dead raiders out of the cooler and putting them on the dining table. I play on "normal" (Rough? Medium? Whichever). so more often the colony collapse issue itself-generated versus 400 mechanooid caterpillars.

Compound. Towns are bad for thermal regulation (so much wasted power) and because of toxic fallouts.

Everything in a single rectangle. When another room is needed, expand with another rectangle. Even the outer walls will be part of this rectangle.
I mean, it's more efficient for materials, logistics and most importantly thermal isolation, so...

Barely contained chaos with no walls for defence, only sand bags and turrets.
