Town or compound?
I personally prefer building a town.

The problem with towns is that they burn so well.

One superbuilding with most important parts hidden in a mountain so mortars don't get them

Blackjack town.

Mountain bunkers every time.

Super complex of one massive building. No mountains.

I tend to build seperate buildings, like a big building as mensa with a kitchen and refrigerator room, a factory building with a huge inventory room and nearly all off the production facilities and one or two living buildings with the beds and a prison building.

That surely isn't mortar proof like a mountain base, but I don't have to dig out rooms (but that really depends on your starting pawns, if they're better at digging or constructing) and I don't have to deal with unforeseeable bug infestations happening in the middle of the base.

It also is an aesthetic preference of mine to not have a mountain base or mega building.

Balancewise of cause, once your pawns are outfitted with good weapons and armor, there is no reason to not build a mountain base, since bugs then become easy to deal with and drop pod raiders/mechs and sieges can't really harm you due to the tick mountain roof.

So if you wanna look at it from a difficulty point of view, if you want an additional challenge, don't build mountain bases, if you don't have to.

I play with Hospitality, so usually I'll start out with a town with housing for the first 8-12 colonists, but when I outgrow that I'll either build a hotel for guests or a compound to expand housing and convert the original housing to bungalows for guests... depends on the map and how the scenario plays out.

I've made some pretty fancy towns, with separate buildings for a butcher shop, bakery, tailor, etc... That can be fun if you have enough people to divide up tasks so each pawn has only one job and works best when you have mods to add new production buildings like looms, ovens and millstones (VGP)

Sometimes a compound works better. Scenarios like a prison, production factory, military base or slave trader lend themselves more to a blocky, planned base, but those are hard to expand for new colonists, so the scenario will have to reply less on keeping moods high since a cramped barracks with sleep interruptions will generally be a necessity.

Always went with the “compound base style” with living quarters outbuildings inside protected by steel walls with a number of turrets surrounding and bigger warehouse farming outside also guarded by sand bags turrets

I prefer to make a compact base resting on a mountain, never on the bottom of a mountain.

Depends on the map.
When im start a new colony, im always hit "Random location" and accept the first one, what i get.
If its flatland... Im build town (never again a large supercomplexum).
If its mountain, well... lets dig.
If the terrain is mixed (like my current colony: hils, but lot flatlands) im use both area. A good shelter under the mountains protect me from mortars (and my tunnels are good to backstab the enemy), but my bedrooms are outside, so no inCest next to my sleeping pawns (only a lonely drop pod attacker literaly next to my arachne. It was funny to see as im drafted her, the raider was killed -> Arachne SMG is lethal in close combat)

Never a mountain - you must achieve balance with symmetry; beautiful symmetry.
Without symmetry the eye twitching starts.

My eye started twitching because of that single square room at the bottom of your base.
