Mountain or Standard Base?
Should I do a mountain or regular base?

They're both with their difficulties. First, I'd say play whichever seems like you will enjoy more. If that's not enough.. mountain bases are going to have serious difficulties with food early on, until you get your hydroponics and chemfuel systems up and running. You'll also have devastating infestation problems, but mortars and droppods won't be nearly as bad as a regular base.

well I'm using a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ of mods, but uh, my main gripe with mountain bases isnt really a food or weapon problem(I usually roleplay as a UN colonial base, we also have soldiers and what have you) it's mostly the stupid chunks that i have to haul and they over look my furniture, sometimes I just pack a bunch of explosives so I dont have to deal with them.
Not a cheating amount of course.

I actually prefer mountain bases, but I keep green houses outside and certain other things outside but behind walls. Mountains protect against drop pod attacks which I LOATHE and with some tinkering and manipulating how the game spawns infestations you can even keep those at bay without cheating or modding.

Outside bases, well you'll need extensive walls, you're vulnerable to drop pods and siege attacks. (sieges aren't really all that dangerous honestly) You can set up an outside base quite a bit faster but you're technically more vulnerable.

They each have their uses and lately I've been choosing random colony sites at the start and just make due with whatever the game gives me. Ugh,, even swamps.
One time a raid drop podded into my open farm area, suffice to say they were mowed down by machine gun fire. I'm trying to decide what to do for my next playthrough tbh.

Mountain bases are inherantly better for several reasons. firstly they provide excellent thermal insulation allowinf you to heat and cool a whole base from outside in. instead of the whole base.

if you learn about mountainy, ness then you can literally decide where an infestation spawns. ( the game is checking for the most mountainy spot to infest, make that spot not a vital area)

stone chunks. these are my main building material turn them into blocks en mass early game. and you will have few uglyness problems. i am saying make like 3 stone block tables and just spam them for a day.

toxic fallout ...............................< ♥♥♥♥ .......... oh wait my base is inside a mountain. no big deal.

this also greatly decreases the actual area you need to defend as your entrance represents a tiny little hole.

In fact, if you leave the walls as the stone and just smooth it out, it makes for some nice beauty boosts just for having your people stand there a bit to smooth it out. Quick and easy. Infestations aren't too bad either. Just sustain a high population of meat shields like pigs or something and when an infestations spawns, set up your troops then restrict the pigs to only go there. They rush in and the bugs slaughter them for you while you shoot them all. You can even use the bugs to feed what animals remain after. Just have to sustain an out of control animal population... I managed to keep 176 red foxes with only 15 or so colonists, so its doable.

Depending on the terrain of the map, I would rather say both if you have a decent amount of land. Infestations is quite abit of a concern but should not be an issue if dealt with correctly.

Mountain bases are a Pain In The A...... to setup correctly.
In part because it is very difficult to "undo" a sub-optimal layout, whereas surface buildings can be rearranged much more easily.

Mountain bases are prone to getting Infestations of Insectoids, and while they can be handled with a bit of forethought they do make *such* a mess of the place!

but..

Mountain bases are immune to drop-pods.
This single factor makes up for all the inconvenience of subterranean planning, and more. Much more.

You have a choice of random center drop pod raids destroying a bunch of your stuff, which you have no control over, or bugs spawning, which you can somewhat control... and while they make a terrible mess, you can at least to some degree manage where they will spawn if you choose or just mine every room or otherwise be prepared.

Could also just turn them off with Toggles if you've dealt with both long enough and don't see the point anymore.
