Can you free slaves from a slaver by attacking them?

Normally i shrug off the slavers, but today they had one particularly sad slave in their mists. I can’t afford them and was wondering if I’d have to kill the slaves with the slavers if i attack them.

From my digging, at least for the A19 version (not sure about 1.1), slaves will either flee or turn hostile. This is because they are technically still apart of their faction. So far the only work around (aside from someone modding it in) is to try and arrest the slave you want to save and recruit them. Sadly for my game i was playing permadeath and couldn’t risk fighting them.

The vanilla solution may be to purchase all of the slaves from the trader, then attack the merchant(s) before they leave the map to recover your Silver.
Haven't tested it myself though.

I think you can buy them, and then just pop the slaver and get the cash back ? I am not 100% sure about the cash part ;p

Slaves are part of the faction that owns them.
If you attack traders of that faction, then the slaves will fight you.

Buy the slave, *then* kill the slave merchant, and get your money back from his cold, dead corpse
