Pemmican is good for quick food and general hauling so it's good for any occasion, however you should make survival meals whenever you're able to as it saves you from having to freeze it.

Survival Meals are definitely the way to go, if you're looking to feed a caravan.

I'll tend to have one Food allocation for my colonists, and another for my caravaneers. It's just a matter of switching the food restrictions over before sending people out, so they're using the one which allows them to eat Packaged Survival Meals, etc. - while the people still at home are limited to Simple/Fine/Lavish meals. :-)
