Why are the cryosleep caskets spelled cryptosleep?
My colonists aren't mining bitcoin when I put them to cryosleep so why's it called a cryptosleep casket? :V

Do YOU understand how those sleep chambers work? Well, no-one does!
That's why it is called CryptoSleep

But cryptography has nothing to do with it. :v

That being said I think I found out the reason for the name: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cryptobiosis

They aren't cryosleep caskets, they are crypto sleep caskets, and their definition is

"A self-powered sarcophagus designed to keep a person in a state of suspended animation for many years."

When the colonist is placed within the Cryptosleep casket they are effectively preserved "forever." That's pretty heady stuff... But, how?

<frantic handwaving and chalk dust generation ensues>

All motion within the boundaries of the interior of the Cryptosleep casket ceases once it is activated. That's everything from molecule to quark... But, that is seemingly impossible. Upon reaching a true absolute zero "temperature" we'd say that massless particles like photons must stop. A massless particle that must, according to Special Relativity, have a velocity that is equal to the speed of light can't just "stop." And, if they did, where would they stop?

We know that, due to Heisenburg, we can't know if such a fundamental particle has stopped and we can't know where it is at that single instant in time when or if it does stop. Momentum and velocity are not the same, of course. But, if a massless particle has no mass and momentum = m*v... Well, the answer is obvious! No mass means no momentum! No mass, no momentum, and now no velocity and, by natural law, we can't know where this particle even is? <poof> It's gone! Obviously, the colonist doesn't disappear from reality, so something else must be going on, here.

If such a particle must move at the speed of light in all frames, and knowing that colonist's bodies are comprised of many such particles, and we can't know where fundamental particles are at a specific time and if actually stopping such particles causes them to disappear from existence... wat do? Hold onto that thought for a second.

Where's the cat? You know that beyond the absolute barrier of the lid of the Cryptosleep casket there is a region where quantum effects are being manipulated by some system that completely relies upon them, right? It isn't about just stopping the body's processes, but manipulating the quantum, reaching into the strange realm of probability where Schrodinger's Cat has dominion. Does the colonist exist? If so, what is their state? It's not a simple matter of wondering whether or not one's shoes are in the shoe-box. Or if they've been replaced by a cat.

This simple fact provides some illumination concerning the functionality of a Cryptosleep casket. Yet, we have to understand its origins.

Relatively speaking, thousands of years ago Crypto Industries was, indeed, a data mining company. But, their operations began outgrowing the limits of "reality." There's a natural law, somewhat, that states "There is only so much information you can fit in a three-dimensional space." We're not normally concerned about dimensions greater than that because we define our reality based upon how many pizzas can fit in a space. Yet, Crypto Industries costs were beginning to grow exponentially due to their ever-increasing need for "more room." They had reached the limits of computational saturation of a three-dimensional space in all their major facilities.

But, as we are all aware, reality is bounded by "dimension." We are bounded in our entire experience by three dimensions of physical reality and an attribute of "Time." (We still don't know wtf "time" is, whether or not its a dimension or if it even exists, but we know it causes pizza to loose heat.) We may be able to detect, or theorize, interactions between our bounded reality and others by the evidence we observe in our 4D space, but we can never, ever, observe anything outside of our 4D space. Never. For all practical purposes other than what we observe as the aggregate observable evidence of these interactions in our own observable universe, nothing beyond our 4D space can truly be said to "exist."

Crypto Industries decided to solve its computational problems not by buying more real-estate, but by finding a way to perform calculations outside of 4D space... Effectively - They increased their real-estate value by creating a "knuckle" of inverted 4D space that took advantage of virtual particles interacting in that space to reveal computational results within our 4D space, exponentially increasing the amount of information contained within their super-saturated instances of 4D space. These computations, due to where they were created and where they did "work", did not practically exist and, thus, were free of what we consider to be "Natural Law."

Now, we've come full circle - We now know the principles behind the operation of the Cryptosleep casket.

The Cryptosleep Casket effectively preserves a colonist "forever" by creating a field within the casket in which nothing can have any velocity, creating an effective Absolute Zero region. Because we can effectively avoid contradictions in our reality by shunting what defies reality into conveniently created other "dimensions" we can side-step natural law in how those operations appear in our own "reality." There can be no violation of natural law where it is impossible to observe, after all. All seeming "violations" occur somewhere else.

Every Cryptosleep Casket contains Crypto Industries patented field generator that creates a "knuckle" in reality where extra dimensions can be virtually accessed. Because both the action of the mechanism and its violations of natural law take place within this knuckle of dimensions, there are no observable contradictions to natural law. And, because the casket is "closed" we know that there is a defined space, yet we are also ignorant of any position of any particle within that defined space and those positions are never defined in our own "reality." They are only ever defined within the Crypto Industries "knuckle" of dimensions created within virtual processes. In effect, they are never defined in our reality at all. (This is a true example of the "pics or it didn't happen" meme.)

So, where does the colonist go?

There are, of course, some more properties of the processes surrounding the Cryptosleep casket. For instance, we are confronted not only by Heisenberg, which the Crypto Industries knuckle of dimensions side-steps, but also Schrodinger. The casket is a quantum environment of probabilities who's wavefunction only collapses when confronted with observation from our own reality. Opening the casket collapses that wave-function so the preserved state of the colonist can be observed. Yet, they will always be there if the lid is opened - A colonist can not "disappear" due to out of control probabilities suddenly being revealed. That would seem to mean that all probabilities of that colonist appearing upon the opening of the Cryptosleep casket must always equal "1." So, of what use is it to call it a "probability" at all?

Again, the "knuckle" of dimensional space originally created by Crypto Industries to solve their real-estate costs problem comes into play. This time, it's coupled with Crypto Industries own "cryptology" for which they are known. In essence, not only are all violations of any Natural Law hidden from our reality within a knuckle of dimensions that effectively block all observations, the entire process is cryptologically encoded so that it is impossible to "decode" outside that single instance of action of encoding. The effect is that all information within the defined space is further encoded within an algorithm that exists only for one single instance. That instance experiences no time, no velocity, no change, as the operators are entirely included in the Crypto Knuckle of dimensional space. This algorithm exists "forever" within that knuckle of dimensional space, secluded from both direct observation and any possible indirect observation in our own reality until... the lid of the Cryptosleep Casket is opened and the entire system collapses into an observable effect.

In short: Cryptosleep caskets work because they effectively lie to the entire universe of possible observations by preserving, if such a word could be used, the colonist in an undefinable, impossible to observe, state.

The root "crypto" doesn't begin and end with cryptography. It means "hidden", which makes sense here both because the sleepers themselves are hidden away from the world, and because cryptosleep is an alien technology "hidden" beyond current human understanding.

There's a bigfoot in every casket that gives the colonist a really big hug while they are in there.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hot_Sleep

The title arises from the operation of somec, the life extension drug forming the foundation of the interstellar Empire. Somec creates an unbearable, torturous burning sensation throughout the body while pushing the patient to suspended animation. However, the somec process exterminates the user's memory, and so these memories are recorded and stored separately shortly before they go under, to be returned to the body after they have awakened, and so the memory of the process itself cannot be retained. Thus, each somec patient experiences the panic of burning hot sleep "for the first time" (as far as their memory goes) no matter how many times they have taken somec before.

Cryobiosis is a form of cryptobiosis that takes place in reaction to decreased temperature.
Cryptobiosis forms are: Anhydrobiosis, Anoxybiosis, Chemobiosis, Cryobiosis, Osmobiosis

Cryptobiosis = Biostasis = Anabiosis

dogecoins and stuff idk
I was wondering about Crypto, as well, but short for Cryptobiosis makes sense. Sure we tend to think of Cryobiosis specially, Never considered that it'd use anhydrobiosis, but I guess maybe the pawns are dried up and shriveled in there

No, they're quite correct. It's called cryptosleep, not cryosleep. Cryosleep, which we're used to seeing in movies and the like, is based on cryostasis, the concept of freezing tissue to halt any degeneration over long periods of time, then thawing the tissue at a later date and restoring body functions. Cryptosleep, which we see in Rimworld, is based on cryptobiosis, which does pretty much the same thing but without the freezing and thawing, which actually makes it viable. Several species, mainly ocean-inhabiting species, use cryptosleep to survive hazardous environments. Cryogenic stasis, meanwhile, is not currently viable - the freezing part works fine, but there's currently no thawing method that'll ensure, or even give you a good chance at, reanimation.

So yeah. Crypto is accurate.

Tardigrades are a perfect example of creatures that use cryptobiosis to even survive the vacuum of space.
