Walls? Stone doesn't burn. Steel does. Stone much harder to break through.
Furniture? Wood is more beautiful than most stones (except marble). Vastly more beautiful than steel. Burning still applies.
Wall material type has zero effect on insulation, only if it's 1 or 2 blocks thick.
That is the wall materal you want to use is stone!
Not all stone is equal. There are several different types of stone.
Some have more hp than others.

if you want it to make a difference i advise HCSK where every alloy has its own benefits and negatives
So, if there is plenty of wood, then use wood and if not then use steel.
In the mid to late game (certainly after you have deep drilling working) it doesn't really matter what you use as long as it is required.
It also puts your colony wealth up higher.
Which really only serves to make the game harder.
