Why do people say to settle in flat areas when Mountains are OP?
IMO mountains/Hills are overpowered in this game. A flat map has a lot of empty space for building things but it severely lacks stone to build with. I personally dislike wood because:
-It's flammable
-It's quite plain compared to the various stone types
-It's the same color as dirt making it hard to tell where dirt is
-It can be used for different, more valuable things instead

Stone requires a lot of time to mine/chisel/place but arguably it looks much better and is easier to tell when it's dirty. On flat maps you can run out of nearby stone quickly and you can only get it if you tediously send caravans to pick up one at a time or wait for Deep drilling which takes forever.

Mountains provide amazing cover from raids/manhunters and create a lot of free inflammable chokepoints.

The Infestations in the caves are usually far enough away that they won't aggro and they don't reproduce as long as you avoid them. If you're lucky they'll spawn in a cave where raiders and caravans need to pass through which will either kill all the raiders or get all the bugs killed by a caravan and hopefully get some free loot and free insect meat/jelly.

On top of that, mountains have plenty of steel, silver and components for free as well as potential Jade and Uranium long before you need to trade or get deep drilling.

I keep seeing people say you want to start on a flat map but from what I see they just aren't worth it. The extra space doesn't really matter because you'll never need a map wide base and even with ~8 colonists you don't need THAT much farm space. Extra forageability/hunting doesn't really matter either because there is still plenty on a mountain map. On top of all that the flat terrain makes it much more dangerous to fight large raids or manhunter packs.

I addressed that though, They are dormant for a long time and caravans usually take care of them for free if you block certain areas. If you don't personally engage them they don't reproduce either.

I'm not talking about the natural caves ones. I'm talking about the ones that suddenly appear in one of your rooms and they reproduce constantly.

I have only had that happen twice with classic AI storyteller and I thought that happened on any map type. Also both times it was quite easy to get 7 people to gun down a few bugs with minimal injuries(by minimal I mean no deaths and no amputations)

in the early stages its not to hard to deal with the bugs. once you reach more wealth and 6-8 hives come crashing down... i hope you got a meatshield

Your 7 guys can gun down 143 killer insects, that appear in the middle of the night in their bedroom?
Wow, impressive!
and this is why you remove all rock chunks, keep it 21c, remove all dirt and use the highest quality of building matirials, no infestations for 3+ years

This is not how you avoid infestations.

Infestations can happen anywhere indoor, under a mountain roof, above -17°C and within some distance of any of your structures

It's not how it works at all.

To be fair that's pretty easy with a set of high quality marine armor and a few decent weapons. The larger issue is the destruction they can cause to the room they spawn in. So maybe say goodbye to that legendary bed and solid gold toilet (dubs).

I prefer to play under mountains anyway, I like carving out a place to live in the rock as that just feels more satisfying to me. I used to turn infestations off in previous versions but never felt the need in 1.0.

On the work tab set firefighting to priority 1. 90% of my walls are wood, never had an issue with fire in almost 400 hours of play, but that's just me.
