Expectations?
I noticed my colonists start with "extremely low expectations" and now in 5507 their expectations are "sky high"...

I understand that things have improved markedly since then, but is there an explanation somewhere as to how more precisely the inner workings of expectations function?

I'd like to know precisely HOW the colonists' expectations rise or fall... Maybe I went too hard with the slate tile sidewalks, or the grand masterwork sculptures at each intersection? They gave really nice bonuses at first, but now with sky high expectations... They're taken for granted!

It is simply a function of your colonys value.

meaning, that as the value of things produced in your colony increases, your colonists will stop getting free mood improvements, with the theory that you are using this wealth to make your colonists happy with a nice bedroom, dining room, food, entertainment, etc.

Hm, OK so then... Maybe having a huge barn with 5 sun lights growing devilstrand is NOT a great idea?

But is it "colony's PRODUCTION" or "colony's VALUE"? The distinction is important. If it's the first, then I could see giving my colony a mostly military slant and attacking / pillaging others for the rest? But if it's the second, then pillaging valuables would then just increase expectations accordingly?

Given that colony production is not listed on any in-game graphs it is safe to assume that this is the only place in the entire game where colony production is used instead of colony wealth. /s

On a more serious note, check Mods/Core/Defs/Misc/ExpectationDefs/Expectations.xml if you want to know the details. E.g. max wealth for extremely low expectations (i.e. +30 mood boost) is 15k.

You can see your colony's wealth from the charts, BTW. And as for your actual question - the wiki has the answers for you. Take a look at this article: https://rimworldwiki.com/wiki/Thoughts

Specifically for your question, scroll to the "Misc" section. New colony optimism / New colony hope are given from the start of the game - the former lasts five days, and is replaced by the latter, which lasts another five days. Also look at "Situation General" - in that section, look at the "Expectations" part. Clicking on any of them brings you to the relevant subsection, which shows you what the different wealth cutoffs are.
