"Farming" stones
Beeing my first real playthrough I have done alot of experimenting and redesigning my base. This has resulted in a shortage of stones (flat map btw). Is there any way to reliably stock up on stones again?

I believe depleted Deep Drills provide stone.... or I have a mod that makes that the behavior. You can also allow for 2 settlements in the Options and set up a satellite mining operation and ship stone back to the main base. That will provide its own dimension of challenge and very possibly, fun.

I found the best option as a new player not ready to run a farming base, to simply have some silver in store and buy them from traders ( after you get trade beacon ) .. simply always be buying Steel / components firstly and stone if needed.

Send a caravan to an adjacent world map tile in search of a mountain to mine........?

I have no idea what the game will do. Maybe it will generate a one-time "random encounter" area that will disappear when you leave it. Maybe the game will generate a permanent area that will stay there every time you visit it. Either way, there might be things you can mine for stone.

This is the easiest (imo) vanilla way to get stone. If you dont have drills the caravan option works as well, but a little more involved.

If you want to mod it, you can get the quarry mod. I havent used it in a long time so I am not sure if its up to date, but it worked pretty good.

Send a caravan with some animals to a mountain spot, grab the chunks / mine out some and take those home. Repeat. If u lucky, u can find some rare ore where u make your camp (if u have the setup camp mod, u can mine more - or go back to spec spots later)

It's up to date and still works great.
Use caravans to bring some rock chunks back from neighbouring tiles while you research deep drills. Once you have deep drills just place one anywhere. I'm assuming you won't have a ground penetrating scanner so you won't be able to see the green tiles with steel/other ore. More than likely you'll place it on a tile with nothing under it, so it will just produce chunks. Deep drills can trigger an event that spawns a bunch of insects, like a smaller infestation with no hives. You'll have a warning and enough time to get away from the drill before they spawn, but if you wanna drill from inside your base you might wanna put some walls and a choke point around the drill.

Last time I was on the ice sheet I had to wait 3 game years for any merchant selling any stone to show up so that's less of a plan and more wishful thinking.

Nobody likes traveling on an ice sheet. If you're in a more hospitable location caravans show up a lot more often.
