One nice way to build up construction early on is to deconstruction the ruined buildings around the map. Of course, with 1 person only, that is usually low priority compared to so many other things.
However, if it's a map with lots of materials like wood, then at least constructing and deconstructing wooden walls near your base can help achieve the same goal as running around the map doing it to the existing walls.
I think at least a few points for cooking can help so you don't get sick, which affects your down time. Or else, make the paste dispenser if you want to make a better use of the available foods but not get sick.
absolute MUST_HAVES
Construction 3 (for traps), and 6 is very handy to allow building electrical stuff.
Crafting 2(for shortbow).
very, very handy:
Animal skill: To keep that Alpaca meat fresh, don't kill it. TAME the beast, then butcher when needed.
Medical: Because infections got to be treated right, on first try. If you fail infection bandage skill, by the time you can try again it is too late to save you.
No points needed, but you *must* be able to do it:
Plant skill. Will level up very rapidly as you farm
Cook. Will level up very rapidly. Food poisoning is not lethal, just very inconvenient.
Shooting: Will level up rapidly, even faster if you suck. Each *attempt* to hunt will improve it.
Optional, but you actually do need it to progress at all:
Mining. Just the ability to swing a stick at the rock is enough. If you have time to worry about Steel and Components and stuff, you are no longer fighting for survival, just comfort.
Optional and unneeded.
Research.. You will be too busy to spend time at a desk, anyways. Get a slave to do it.
Melee.. virtually useless, if you cannot afford to be wounded, ever.
Social.. There is a reason why you are abandoned naked and alone in the wilderness.
Art.. As with research. takes too much time, make someone else do it. later.
I found the most important thing for survival to be avoiding ever getting into a melee fight, infact just avoid getting injured at all. So I made traps that funneled with sand bags and was able to see off all crazy animals and raids that way.
I ended up finding that growing food was easier than I thought and stuff like corn keeps for ages without refrigeration.
On my latest run I've now built up to a colony of 14 people from 1 naked :-D
Weird that I never encountered any drop pods with people in them, I had to get all people by capture and a few who wandered in and joined.
