Temperate Forest with Summer/winter rate 50/50 to build forteress and test it (raider are not bothered by climate)
Tropical Rainforest to build my agri city
Didn't really test the other, but I guess I would go to
Icy biome to build a stockfood+resurector city, but also could be my main base If I could n't manage illness
Arid biome to build my commercial center for reduced travel tim
Temperate forestd and boreal forests are balanced IMO. If you want a bigger challenge but not too harsh go for a tropical forest. Tons of vegetation and animals, but the downside is there are many diseases during a year.
That's 3 related but different concepts.
"Best" biome to play on
"Personal favorite" biome to play on
"Like" to play on. No, "like" is **not** the same as "personal favorite", merely related.
In sequence:
Best: Temperate forest. A good balance of climate, diseases & etc. Easy start
Best: Ice sheet. If you can hack IceSheet, you are on the cutting edge of survival optimization
Best: Extreme Desert. IceSheet, with more sweat!
Best: Boreal forest. Habitable, with a wonderful Winter wonderland. Prettiest, for sure
Best: Tropical Jungle. Who says a mountail full of snowy xmas trees is prettier than my flowers! And vines! and swamps! Do you have Rhino's in that there Boreal forest? Noooo! Not even Elephants!

I have a feeling this post could get very long.
.
ALL biomes have merit, by different measures. Then factor in amount of mountains. Then factor in proximity to roads allowing rapid trade. Then factor in isolation from enemies, allowing relative peace.
I currently have one longrunning game of a Cyborg Colony of Transhuman Extremists, gearing up to conquer the World, from their temperate forest hilly abode.
I currently have a Naked Survivor, no-recruits-allow-at-all, paranoid hermit hillbilly, in a Boreal Mountain, bravely trying to build the defenses to protect his Starship during powerup for launch
I currently have a Naked Survivor, on an ice sheet, counting his days of food left on his fingers and toes. He has 5 days of food, so that's more than his counting method can support, so all is *fine*.
I currently have a Tribal Outcast group of 5 not-so-bright cavemen in a Jungle somewhere. Three of them have malaria. Three of then have Plague. Four of them have mechanites of some sort, and the other one is stoned on the smokeleaf he is making to ease their pain. On second thought, I do not think I will have this colony very much longer.
if you get one of those nice coves in the mountain you can get a great defense while still having room for solar and the 24/7 working farms
