Can you just use torches for growing plants indoors?

If there's a problem with the flammability, that should be an easy fix, to put the torch on a non-flammable surface, then the plants around it. And for the only 50% light, won't that be alright because the torch doesn't go off at night like a sun lamp and plants are fine with 50% light?

Plants need 51% light to grow. Torches will not work.

Additionally, plants can only grow so fast, so the sunlamp turning off is a good thing as it will wont waste power.

Actually that was a bug I reported long ago and Tynan used my suggested fix. If you notice, plant growth needs a minimum of 51% light in the message. With torches only supplying 50% light, that is not enough.

To be clear, at one point using torches was an option. But you'd have to harvest early as even though they grew, they grew so slow that they would die of old age before they reached full growth.

Plants rest at night, so even if you had light they wouldn't grow.
