They're good games Bront...
;)
Prison Architect is undoubtedly the best game in the prison simulator/base builder genre... and, yes, I had to add "base builder" because there are other prison simulator games. Like, wtf?
On DF - I love the concept, love reading AARs, occasionally watch Let's Plays of it... but can't for the life of me play the darn thing because it's a cobbled together nightmare of UI hell... It's irresponsibly designed with love and care, just like my last marriage.
DF's "actual graphical UI port" is coming to Steam, eventually. It won't be the same game as it's a limited licensed version, but it will be "something."

(Honestly, I think it'll probably be a barely functional port with limited features except for the charge to one's credit card.)
DF is free. Worth installing and substitutes very well as an aerobic exercise for those trying to max out their pulse rates. (Note: Aficionados will attempt to scourge those who complain about DF's inaccessibility, citing its groundbreaking approach to story-telling gaming and its wonderful, truly historic, world generation. That's because misery loves company and DF fans gain soul energy from luring in unsuspecting gamers.)
DF is a good game if you can get past its near total lack of accessibility. It's truly an added-value gaming experience because one can throw can of "instant" biscuits into one's PC case and they'll be ready to eat in about fifteen minutes after one embarks.
PS - And, I'm ticked off and that's why I am posting in desperation :) ... I have spent awhile looking for something similar to Rimworld, but with a decidedly different sort of setting/flavor/etc and can't find crap... Well, all I seem to find is crap. Crappity crap crap.. Abandoned games. Bugfests. Shallow games. "Looks great, will cause you to want to stick a fork in a toaster" games. Games that never were, games that will be, and some games that have yet to come to pass... WTF? Did "Rimworld" just discover this genre, take it all the way to the finish line and nobody figured out how to "do it again?" The plethora of "useless piece of overpriced crap" games on Steam that tout features they don't really have is... <sigh> not surprising, really. :/
:)
There's gotta be some darn game out there that combines similar genres as Rimworld does... gotta be.
EverQuest came with the "Divorce DLC" pre-installed... :)
I've looked at this a few times, but haven't made up my mind if I should pull the trigger on it or not. Opinions, anyone?

Might not be "fun" to >me< either... It's just an attempt to find something until my "Have you played Rimworld, recently" addiction takes over, again. :)
Management, builder, colony survival, multiple characters, rpg aspects, rts tactical combat, crafting, research, open-world, sandbox.... Human Leather Hats... Why isn't "Wearable People-Skin" a search tag on Steam?
Lol. Got a chuckle outta that. :)
Reviews lead me to believe there's some "misses" in that game's design in some spots. And, that whole "Demonic Cataclysm" thing reminds me of the various Cthulu'esque Rimworld mods, so there's nothing extra being gained there over those, IMO.
There's a game I can't quite find complete memories of in my brain atm... It's a sort of post-apocalyptic RPG colony'ish kinda game with... "lots of brown in it." :) Single character, IIRC, with an open-world sandbox gameplay style with missions/quests/buildables/equipment/gear stuff... I know I'm not describing it adequately, but I just can't remember the darn thing fully atm.
Anyway, if any of that strikes a chord, any hints would be appreciated. It's a bit off the mark for a fully compatible "Like Rimworld" suggestion, but I've come up empty quite a bit in trying to find something "Like Rimworld" to play. (Which means I'll probably try another playthrough of Rimworld or something... :))
It's not that I can't play anything else, it's just... dangit, there's gotta be some other builder/management/rpg/survival/crafting/open-world/sandbox game out there worth playing. :)
Friggin' "Ark?" But, that's FPS and doesn't have NPCs to manage, right? (Except dinosaurs... AND THERE ARE MODS FOR THAT FOR RIMWORLD! ZOMGZ WY PLAE ANYFING ELS???!"
:)
I followed it for a while and eventually had my daughter who can fluently speak/read/write Chinese if it was ever going to be translated into English and at the time the Dev stated he had no plans for it.
It's not much help and I can't remember the name of it for the life of me, but maybe you can track it down. It really did look a lot like Rimworld, so much so it could've just been a modded game. I never saw any videos of it and that's just going by the screens. If I can remember teh name I'll post back.

Maybe? There's another one I knew of that was more similar but I couldn't find it on my wishlist. I feel like that game is the one you're talking about. Wonder if it got removed or something.
There are videos now and they look interesting, and some of the reviews are saying there's a mod that translates the game into English but it's wonky. It really does look interesting.
TLDR: Browse around when you have an open-mind for new games
lol I still go through this sometimes. I look for something a bit too specific or something similar to other games. I try not to do it anymore. Don't let it bum you out as there are many great games out there. One might not entertain you but there's plenty to try if it fails.
Setting yourself up to be disappointed if you're going to get into a game & you want the play-style to be like others.. Searching for something specific may have you turning down games might like in the process. Hell, why look for another rimworld-like game IF it's getting kind of stale to you at this moment? May not apply to you but definitely does to some players lurking.
I'm sure you know but it's hard to truly apply it sometimes - developers try to have their own take on things.. Every once in a while there will be that one gem you never knew you wanted or you'll stumble across something better than what you're looking for. Every now and then you find a game that has all the elements you want, you think you'd like, it looks great & the concept is solid.. but you don't like it.
Look at your example: you mention ARK.. " but that's FPS and no NPC to manage." I get the impression that you're still stuck on whatever idea you want in your head and I guess my advice is that it's best to let it go & hold off til you find a title that you find interesting in its own way. Or simply wait if you keep coming up with reasons to not try out a game. Kind of why I'm not linking games right now.
Did ARK catch your eye? Did it make you extremely curious? Or are you just settling on a genre or recommendations & that's what popped up? It reminds me when I looked at subnautica. I had so many reasons to not give it a shot a while back. Took a LONG time but the game blew my socks off when I finally tried it. Another thing to keep in check is don't let other games spoil genre/mechanics for you as I've had other surprises like that since then. Good luck!

There are tons of likely candidates there, so many that instead of finding their page on Steam and linking them here, I decided to just link Splattercat's channel. He covers mostly indie and small dev games with "impressions" style gameplay now. (Used to do more "Let's Play" series vids. Does some streaming now, I think, though I don't watch him as often as I used to.)
A good many builder/management/rpg titles there with crafting, open-world play and the like.
The thing is, though, since most of these are indie and small dev games, if they're on Steam they're likely in seemingly perpetual "E.A." Many indie/small dev games go through long periods like that where a dev is trying to fund their development of the game through the E.A. process. Not a terrible idea, but it generally results in a long dev process with a game that takes some patience to "play."
No.... :P
Just joking, but there's a point - If I'm looking for "a game like Rimworld" then browsing around with "an open mind" for games to play isn't going to achieve the goal, is it? :)
And, I would hope most players would understand that it's the whole "management/building/survival/crafting/open-world... etc" sort of game that I and others looking for games similar to Rimworld would be most likely interested in, not necessarily a "Rimworld Clone." For individual players looking for same, there's a pretty big scope of possible candidates out there. Some, however, suck, are on their way to sucking, aren't developed enough to measure their suck or have been fully released and development is no longer active, making their current level of suck permanent. :) I want to try to avoid those ones...
That's very true. I can entertain myself in terms of gaming with lots of choices, it's just that the thread is kind of focused on a "game like Rimworld" and I've got that "itch" right now. And, other itches, like "why isn't there a game like I'm imagining in my head that on the market right now and maybe it's possible for a non-coder like myself to make-it-happen?" :)
On the interpretations of different developers in specific genres: I agree. Finding new interpretations is what "genre-based gaming" is all about. There are few games that are going to ever be "exactly" what a gamer wants. That's usually because we end up discovering a "new idea" as we're fed new gameplay material. One wonderful and powerful solution to finding a game that "almost does it" is "mods." That's a big reason why "can it be modded" is such an important decision point for many gamers, including myself. :)
ARK is likely a good game. It's got a nice following and people seem to enjoy it. The gameplay looks interesting and is likely of a sort that I'd enjoy. I'll likely buy it one day. It's just not what I'm looking for at the moment.
I'm always on the fence about Subnautica. I'll probably get it one day, but I am not a fan "deep water." While I'm not quite suffering from thalassophobia, I'm not far from it because "reasons." :) The game looks like a great "relaxing" game for the base-building and crafting elements and the like, but the progression requires definitely "unrelaxing" things... And, if one takes a look, that's the "number one reason why" many gamers don't buy Subnautica. :)
PS - Still looking for "that one game I saw that one time." :/ It's like an ear-bug that defies all cures.

RW would need Z-levels and/or much bigger maps, to start with, to contain such a monstrosity, as well as MUCH more robust in-game logic to operate it.
........that plays MineCraft.
Yup!

A MineCraft GBA playing Pokemon, to the point the ROM author has gotten to:

And an enterprising freak HAS written the start of a sort-of beginning of a version of MineCraft for the Game Boy Advance!:
https://www.reddit.com/r/gamedev/comments/b3host/minecraft_on_the_game_boy_advance_in_2019/
Of note, these are full recreations of a Game Boy and GBA, so they CAN play other games. It's the ROMs here that are incomplete, not the underlying "hardware".
So...yeah. It's not really the beast you're cringing from, but it IS an eldritch horror of its own, nonetheless xD .
Edit -> I was reading a bit of interesting DF stuff (there's always something interesting about the game) and just realized... Tarn and Zach Adams (the devs) live 22 miles from me (direct distance; it's on the west side of the Puget Sound, so 42 miles driving or a ferry ride + less driving). I could easily visit on a weekend, although for their sanity and peace of mind I won't.
DF groupies... Now THERE is an eldritch horror of a hue not often seen on this sphere >.<' ! But I must admit the urge to smoke a fat bowl of (legal!) weed with 'em.
