Do Power Claws work with weapons?
Do you need to go unarmed to make use of them?

IIRC you CAN use weapons but there's a manipulation penalty.

I thought the manipulation penalty was removed a while back
And I think having both power claws and a weapon at the same time can help, as sometimes pawns punch each other despite having a weapon.

A pawn has a list of melee attacks that they can use and randomly choose their attack based on its damage and the damage of others, with more damaging attack being more likely to occure. They can punch with either fist or do a headbutt. Additionally the headbutt has a modifier that makes it a lot less likely to be chosen.

Equipping a weapon adds attack to the list but also adds an additional modifier to the unarmed attacks that makes them a lot less likely to be chosen.

So in short, a power claw will work with a weapon equipped, but not too significantly, as the pawn will only rarely punch with it. You can manually make them drop their weapon when going melee to make it more effective.

yes it does. It used to have manipulation penalty but it was removed, so it is great to give it to your ranger pawn so they can defend themselves.

YariMurai has a good point.

The Power Claws are best used for ranged colonists in case they get caught in melee. This seems to be their intended function.

Melee colonists have better options than the claws as just about every melee weapon will be better.

The manipulation penalty was removed in the 1.0 release.

Power Claws sound cool, like Wolverine, but are actually kind of just like scratchers. It's safe to disregard them for melee colonists and ok to have for ranged if that is convenient.

It's worth noting that while they don't have a direct negative to manipulation anymore, their part efficiency went from 92% (IIRC) to 100%, that didn't really change their comparative effectiveness. 100% is still a lot worse than 125% or 150%, speaking of bionic and archotech arms, and manipulation is still a very important stat for all colonists, especially in melee. Power claws are still bad, but they are no longer worse than organic arms.

Oh yeah, pawns won't use the power claws when social fighting. They will not scratch each other like rabid cats.

They won't use power claws to scratch each other, but they do seem to enjoy scratching each others eyes out none the less... or bite a leg off... or a head.

I don't think pawns scratch each other. Maybe they'll bite an eye out, or punch it.

That happened to me yesterday. There was a random cat fight in the colony and one girl bit the other's thumb off. Oof.

It's funny when the injury description of this is "devoured." Especially if they aren't cannibals.

You can win a fight, but when you eat someone's toe, you win all future fights.
