I have lost a colony to a mad raccoon. the Colonist would shoot at it but once they get into melee range they stop doing anything and then go down in three or four seconds because the raccoon starts rapid meleeing them. I also seen a weapons caravan of 10 be taken out be 3 mad rabbits. The surviving rabbit killed 3 of my colonist before I killed it.
Then the raids, My first raid on the new version, on a new colony, killed my colony. 2 ranged units and 1 melee unit the ranged units could not hit the raider and when the raider started to attack my melee unit, the unit would not move. Than when the raider attacked with the range units they to would do the same. Then after restarting and getting a raid, I had try to melee with 3 colonies at once and only one would attack the raider while the other to acted as if the raider did not exist and proceed to get killed.
I don't know what's up I've read they added stunning or staggering into the game but the way the animals and raids melee attacks are, three attacks at once, and the fact any colony owned entities being unable to move when attacked in melee -range is perfectly fine other than the decrease accuracy (had a level 10 shooter with a sniper rifle at the start missed like a level 0 shooter with a shotgun)- there is clearly a bug with melee.
I don't know, I would have to breed lynx or something and see if they get hurt very much. It seems like they got injured and died regularly on 18 as well, I would often be eating the predator that died from an infection or something. I mean, I would say maybe it changed, but... when I started playing again after months off I remember thinking "oh yeah, see if the predator is dead or killed something." So, I suspect the tweaks may have really hurt the predators, but the change may be overblown as well. The thing is they might run an ecosystem or something to figure it out and so you would have to take their reproductive rates into account. That's as far as your realism angle goes. As far as the game goes these animals are only rough equivalents and the terrain we get to live on is often abundant with tough critters. Lots of big animals and not so many squirrels.
I think that predator animals, in general, have always made poor choices in what to eat, and that they should generally always select smaller animals rather than just the closest animal, but that would also make the game harder.
its the stuns. Before 19, only predators stunned. Now everyone stuns. Predators got nothing while everyone else got buffed.
At least they respawn
Playing 18, my dog and all my wolves could hunt just fine, without injury, smaller animals. This wasn't my preferred way of making sure they got fed, but they did it often enough during hard times that I was never worried about losing them to some rodent that was a Blackbelt in Squirrel-Foo..
Not as much. The predators share space with all the other animals. If the predators die and all the plant eaters spawn in their place, no more predators unless you go out there killing to reduce the numbers (or they leave for winter)
