Of course I haven't used pets in I'm not sure how many builds, so my method may be way out of date.
Artic wolves live outside the base, with a sleeping area notched into the wall. Just outside their door to the wilderness is a stockpile for them to bring me stuff. They eat the wild animals, and they attack the big animals then haul the corpse back to their stockpile, at which point my humans can carry the animal corpse inside the base for butchering ... no mods needed.
Also, the best time to reorganize stocks is at night, when animals sleep. I usually have two pawns on the night-shift, a dedicated hauler and a janitor. To prevent the janitor from disturbing the other sleeping pawns can be debatable, but if I time my janitors wake-up then I can "shift-click" all the dirty rooms first (when nobody is sleeping) then leave the janitor to resume cleaning anywhere without having a specific allowed area for him. I have my own routines that keep me active.
