noob here. flooded by Yorkshire Terriors
Ok, I'm playing my first real playthrough after I learned the basics. Everything is running smoothly and then ... my base is overrun with about 15 little dogs. they're making their way to my freezer stockpile and eating my food...

I didn't know what to do, so I had my pawns slaughter all of them and then haul their bodies to a stockpile. Now I'm making a bill for butchering.

Was there something else I could've done? Tame wasn't an option when I selected them and I can't support 15 dogs anyway ...

you could have saved a male and female, let them breed for profits but traders can be rare.
but its not a bad call to butcher them all, do it all the time my self.

Have a zone for animals that excludes your main meal storage area, and assign them to that. Yorkies are pretty bad though since 1.0s training maintainance nullifies any pawn time advantage from the occasional hauling proc. The best use for them is converting human meat into animal meat if you are unable to acquire other carnivorous pets. (You'll need a psychopath chef for the humanlike butchering)

Butchering the yorkies was probably the best choice.
Yorkies are useless. Do eat them.
Always slaughter or sell any pet that can't be trained to haul or fight.

You've done the right thing, and those yellow armchairs look great.

If your base is located near a neutral nearby town. You could have had all the dogs join a caravan. Then sell them at the town.

often this happens before my base is ready to support farm animals consistently (especially herbavorious species) so i create a zone for animals to be slaughtered near my food stockpile, set ALL animals to go to that spot, and let my pawn murder 15 animals.

the rest of my pawns are on standby for the impending PETA invasion.

that should be a mod.

for no reason other than moments like this.

Tories are not good for much but they are at least better than cats. Cats are completely useless.

I would have eaten the terriers too.

On the topic of cats, they eat less than terriers, at 0.1 hunger rate. They eat less than squirrels too. Actually the only animal that eats less than a cat is a cobra.

Cats are fast, giving a better chance to escape predators. They have a fairly high dps for their size, but can't train them in any way shape or form.

So in comparison, you can have a whopping 18 cats for the same food cost as housing ONE Timber wolf! That's pretty crazy.

Do I keep them? No lol. But maybe I might if a bunch joined. If you wanted to have a bunch of nuzzlers rooming around your base that have a decent survivability, cats are a decent option. They're insignificant, and you won't even notice a drain on your food.

If your in a biome with a lot of rats and squirrels and don't care about hunting them. You could let a few cats roam with them set to not allowed inside anywhere in your colony. If a cat happens to die to a rat, you just eat it. If a preditor kills a cat, better it than a colonist.

If they make kittens, free food or something to sell.

I'm always glad for animals to join, because my colony can always use more food.

Heres one way to get rid of a flood of free animals... Just add them to a zone thats over one of these.

Just to add, tame wasn't an option, because they were already tamed, I guess. There is an event where a bunch of tame animals join your colony. If they were wild, you couldn't slaughter them, just hunt them. You can keep wild animals away from your food by walling it in. May be important for your rice farms, but don't forget to remove the roof. I really would like a sort of fence, which only keeps wild animals out, but is passable for your own animals and humanoids.

Wait till winter or toxic fallout when your crops (Like heal root crop) are the only plants in the area that are still alive. Moreso if you have wild boars.

They'll eat your crops, if you kill one, the group will then eat the dead boar like a lavish dinner.

Cats are esential in a colony for me. You keep a few in a small part of the base (social room + dining room usually), and use them to make sure your colonists get that nuzzle mood bonus.
