Question about seeds....I think I understand how they work, but found this thread
thanking people for sharing their seeds, such great seeds, thanks everyone! And having just educated myself on what exactly a seed is, I'm wondering what could make a seed "great", you know?
Like, with all the diversity you find on any given map, what would make one map better than another? Doesn't every map pretty much have everything?

On general? Yes, at east with a 100% seed

Specifically? Nope:
You can find lots of 100%seeds on which you won't find something like: River + Ancient Road + Mountainous + 2 rocks of your personal preference in a growing period range and climatic zone + biome you prefer/want to play right now.

And that's just a few factors which can be paired but don't have to.

How easy it is to get a 'good seed' purely depends on what your preferences/plans are. :)

Oh weird, okay...so some maps DON'T have everything. Huh. I bet then that it could be pretty educational to take a look at what some people believe constitutes a "great" seed. See what all you may have been missing by just playing the first map the game offered you!

Well, usually every seed has everything BUT it won't always be combined in a way that is desireable on a map inside the seed.

If you plan for a vault base inside a mountain with a river on the map, it usually is a bit harder to find a nice spot as you need to find: Mountainous + River (Creek is just to small, needs to be river :) ).

And then you still have the other factors:
- Biome
- Temperature
- Growing period
- Caves Y/N
- Distance and number of other factions around
- Nearby road?
- Rock types available

The more factors you need to be in a special way, the harder it gets to find a 'good seed', no matter if you plan for something easy and convenient or if you aim for a specific challenge.

And after all the factors are checked and you got a nice and cozy map, you might find it to have not enough space for what you are planning, or not enouh geysirs or just a strange layout that interfers with your building style.

Finding THAT map to play is a W1000000 dice roll :D

Very nice explanation...that makes sense. Never really knew the kind of preparation people would put into finding the perfect colony site, figured maybe there was something a bit more dramatic going on between seeds.

The one you describe sounds pretty nice....think I'm going to check out that seed exchange on Reddit or wherever that was.

Thanks a lot...good writing!
