Roofs?
I just did the tutorial and I built a couple of structures. It asked me to build a roof, but as a patio. It did not ask me to build a rook over the new structures I made.

My question is that if I simply connect four walls, does this include the roof, the foundation, and everything I need for it to be a functioning building? Also, how can I tell if there's a roof since everything is see-through? I don't want my little dudes getting wet on their first night!

There is a "show roof" button down in the lower right. I think it looks like a house. Click that and it will show all roofs that are actually in place (not ones scheduled to be built)

Dark green means it is overhead mountain roof, light green means it is thin roof (meaning it can be removed with the "remove roof" order)

Roofs can be built up to 6 tiles from any wall. So the patio means use the build roof tool to make a roof on the outside edge of a buildings wall.

That 6 tile limit also means you can have a max width of any room of 12 inside tiles. It can be however long you want, just max of 12 wide. (or 14 if you want to count the wall tiles themselves)

Roof can be put 6 tiles (I hope I'm right) away from a single wall. So, you can for example place a single wall in the middle of nowhere and it will be like a mushroom. Roof is invisible to your eye because you somehow have to see the colonists, but when there's a shadow you should know there is roof. If you move your cursor on a tile then in the bottom left corner it will say what is there. You can also use a tool in bottom right corner to see which tiles have a roof over them.

The game automatically creates a roof area when you enclose an area, so you don't have to micromanage it beforehand. If you hover over a tile, it will tell you in the bottom left what kind of roof it has (if any,) and in the bottom-right you can find out whether or not an area is full roofed, partially roofed (# of unroofed tiles,) or entirely outdoors. Foundations aren't a thing, and you can easily build walls on any terrain that supports heavy structures (all walls, most power generation, and some tables.) Floors aren't necessary for a room, but are nice if you don't want your colonists complaining about it being ugly/dirty.

perfect, some of those questions were conming from the way we build things in prison architect. These were all helpful suggestions. So far, a have a few buildings and a little farm. I'm mostly following the instructions in one of the guides i found here in the steam community hub (grimm 77)

You can always make support columns. (-:

True, I should have included the word "unsupported" in saying max is 12

I mostly just included my remark in case people hadn't thought of that yet.
