Dark green means it is overhead mountain roof, light green means it is thin roof (meaning it can be removed with the "remove roof" order)
Roofs can be built up to 6 tiles from any wall. So the patio means use the build roof tool to make a roof on the outside edge of a buildings wall.
That 6 tile limit also means you can have a max width of any room of 12 inside tiles. It can be however long you want, just max of 12 wide. (or 14 if you want to count the wall tiles themselves)
The game automatically creates a roof area when you enclose an area, so you don't have to micromanage it beforehand. If you hover over a tile, it will tell you in the bottom left what kind of roof it has (if any,) and in the bottom-right you can find out whether or not an area is full roofed, partially roofed (# of unroofed tiles,) or entirely outdoors. Foundations aren't a thing, and you can easily build walls on any terrain that supports heavy structures (all walls, most power generation, and some tables.) Floors aren't necessary for a room, but are nice if you don't want your colonists complaining about it being ugly/dirty.
You can always make support columns. (-:
I mostly just included my remark in case people hadn't thought of that yet.
