Coastal Starting Colony
If you settle next to a coast, is there any advantages? The moisture pumps don't work on deep water (logical, but draining shallow water is superlous since you can walk on it anyways and unlike marshes are rarelly blocking your construction and they work on so little area its almost a waste of power). There are no tmable animals, and a tamable aquatic animal would be of questionable use in a terrestrial base anyways. You can't make a boat and cross to an island.

I thought that maybe being close to the caost would make a higher percentage of land fertile. My friend quick started 30 non costal temperate forest, 10 coastal temperate forests, 90 non coastal tundra, 30 costal tundra, 100 non coastal boreal, and 30 coastal boreal corests. The ammount of land at 100% fertility was greater in the coastal starts, but by a non-significant ammount. (Say you roll a die 43 times and roll a 6 on 9 sperate times. You are not going to say the die is loaded based on the fact that you saw a 6 2 more times that expected).

So you can't build boats to get to the world's islands There is no fertiltiy bonus to the rest of the map. The map isn't larger to compensate the lost space to the ocean. You can't make a giant boardwalk. There is no joy activity to watch the ocean (like there is stargazing for everywhere), so there is no mood denifits. is tis just "looks cool, doesn't do anything"? I'm ok if that is the case, I just want to know.

It blocks enemies from spawning there, so defensive structures aren't needed as much

In a word - no. Water provides no advantages as far as I can tell. Sure, you are protected on that side, but same applies if you build with your back to a mountain.

^What they said, and if you play with a water mod (Dub's Bad Hygiene, No Water No Life) you got an easy source. Also if you play with a fish mod you can get food from the ocean.

Pretty much it.

We really could use, like, boats.

Can you make a moat around your base for protection?

Well, there could be other benifits besides fisihing. Coasts (at least in Europe and the Medditeranean) tend to be fertile, so I thought maybe the devs made it emmulate that, but a square by square count of every single 100% fertile tile suggested on,

I tend not to go for the underground base as I find that too cheesy. On one hand, I really hate those mortars. On the other hand, it blocks pod based attacks too.
