Raiders Keep Attacking Insect Hive
Odd behavior. Two different raids now have had the raiders completely ignore my base and go straight for an insect hive only to of course die. Is that normal behavior?

Yeah raiders seem a bit stupid in that respect - they also attack animals like bears and cougars that are near them. The threat indicator is a bit off, so you can take advantage of it a bit, though leaving an insect colony alive is probably a bad idea - they multiply very quickly, and become just about impossible to deal with eventually.

Hive isn't set to breed and the insects keep to a 5x5 space around the hive. I seem fine since I have no reason to go near it.

Wait, I didn't see insect hives since 15 because... I guess I got lucky. Do they have non breeding hives? How do you get them?

Desert environment, large hills, map spawned with an insect hive. Pretty sure its a first for me too but it didn't seem odd to me. I checked the hive and it doesn't breed so about 5 insects just chill over there and raiders keep running all the way across the map to fight them.

They also often spawn on maps that have caves, which is a trait you can see from the world map. Those hives don't reproduce, and the bugs just mill around them. Usually they eventually die of starvation, in the winter.

I often go for the small hills unless there is marble and two other stone types on some large hill tile, so that mighr explain it. I also spent the last 7 months trying to learn how to "Tundra" without cannicals or asthetic.

"Can't plant because it's now growing seasons" but the temperature is fine up to 3 days before the offocial season! I know because I can dev mode in plants and they die in the night 4 days beofrwe the official start but not 3 days before.

Sucks for raiders because its permanent summer here.

Maybe a "pawn spawner" should dump some meat there every week to stop this idiocy?

I believe they changed it sometime earlier this year so that they will eventually aggro on your base. But they can act as a deterrant until that happens. Sometimes they will just not de-agro after killing the raiders too and head straight for your base.

I did notice the only time they poke outside of a 5x5 tile radius is after they've been attacked. They just never went far enough out to be worth any attention. I'll need some research before dealing with them.

I think it's mostly a pathfinding issue. Caves usually work as shortcuts since the terrain is easier to move on, so attacking raiders will often path through them. Since the insects are not hostile until you get near them, they don't consider them a threat until it's too late.

Funny, because the raiders spawn on the bottom left corner of the map. My colony is in the middle of the map. The insects are in a small cave off to the right corner of the map. There is no reason for them to go there. There's no logical or advantageous reason for them to attack the insects.

Guess Tynan figured food restrictions were more important than logical AI programming.

insects are everyone enemy and with constante agro vs everyone.
in my map, they sometimes also do that... but not always. Probably you have some map conditions that make this more common

my raids are ONLY attacking the small hive on my map.... then I have to go on special ops missions while the bugs are asleep to loot everything from the dead dude.... lol

The big issue with that is actually not the raiders it's the fact that the hives drop insect jelly. When a colonist goes into a mental breakdown and gets the munchies they might end up in the nest. I had that happen to me far too often especially in young colonies. Older ones usually have better food close to the base and the bugs get eventually beaten. But the food binge issue got me re-starting quite a few times.
