Steel and components on flat map.
After some time playing I can finally start crafting the fun stuff: guns, flak armor...

Sadly there are no visible steel or components in the map so... what can I do?

Buy from traders.

Set up a secondary outpost in the mountains for mining.

Either of those works.

I was going to mention that, but if he has no steel or components he can't exactly build the machines. :p

Then, as a small tribe, what goods should I craft to trade for steel and components? Traders are a rare sight tho...

Melt raiders weapons.
Smelt from slag.

You should craft statues. All traders take statues.

Statues are also generally worth a good deal more than their constituent components.

For example, Slate Blocks have a market value of .9 per block to bulk goods traders. You can use 50 of them to make a Slate Sculpture which has a base market value (assuming normal quality) of 215 -- over four times more!

Hell, even a silver sculpture... 500 silver to make a sculpture worth 755? Not bad.

Also all items have a market price multiplier when selling. Weapons, for example, sell for only 40% of their value. Sculptures sell for 110%.

Of course, if you have devilstrand, make hundreds of cowboy hats. But only bulk goods traders buy clothes, whereas any traders will buy statues

(Not sure about slavers but I hardly ever get them)

Depending on you base biome, mass produce sculptures made from wood. Then build caravans and send them to nearby friendly factions and sell til they got nothing decent left to trade and move on to the next faction base.

Then there's always smokeleaf joints. It's one of the few drugs that I allow my colonists to have when their mood drops below 30%, due to it's low addiction rate, so I end up making them forever.

Not all traders buy them, but most do. It's decent cash here and there.

Do you have a comms console? If you do contact a friendly faction and request a bulk goods caravan for 1100 silver, then get ready to trade whatever you can for silver and steel/machine parts.

It is always a good idea to keep in stock goods that you can trade at bulk traders, this way even if the caravan you requested brought no steel or machine parts you can still make silver out of it and order another caravan from another faction.

Also, orbital trading should be the main source of trading opportunities for you, no matter where you are on map, but sending a small caravan with goods you want to trade to another village of a friendly faction will allow you to trade with them directly, might be worth the trouble if you have pack animals available to carry the steel and parts back.

i thought requesting caravans now costs good will

I dunno, I think it requires a positive standing with the faction and 1100 silver, IIRC.

Yes, it costs goodwill.
AquaX Oct 16, 2018 @ 10:51pm
It cost 15 goodwill and if you are allies and trade/ do quest they provide, you get enough. They cap at 100 as allies state but they naturally decay until it reachs 50 so once your above 50 as allies, just burn through it.

If you're already short of steel and components, then you shouldn't be thinking of making any guns or armour when there are more important uses for those resources, such as a components bench in order to produce your own, or hospital beds and vitals monitors etc.
You should have a good production chain going to provide profitable goods for trade.
You should be focusing your research towards deep drilling and transport pods. The deep drilling will allow you to source more from your map. The pods will allow you to fly caravans directly to your target tile. This could be for trade or for sending a mining party.
