Ridiculous rat
What's with the ridiculous rat mauling all my colonists to death?
Why don't they just step on the darn thing?
Stupid game.

Just attack back? or change the colonist stance from 'flee when in danger' to 'attack when in danger'?

This is like complaining you get killed by the first enemy in Doom while you aren't even trying to shoot it.

Because the rats in rimworld are larger than most RL dogs.

They did attempt to attack back; but they were armed with firearms and were shooting sideways or backwards, instead of at the rat. Terrible shots, even though they had 10-15 shooting skill.
Stupid game.

I might try again if I can find a "No Ridiculous Rats" mod.
But, good grief, how many times will I need to find a mod to rectify some other terrible game design flaw. And I'll need to restart the game every time. Ughh.

just melee the rat
you dont step on things by shooting them
a knife is the ultimate rat or squirrel killer but a rifle can be used as a club

Seriously? I call BS.

Even if you sent in all your colonists one at a time one rat should NOT be able to kill any pawn at all, let alone multiple.

First off, even if all your pawns had 0 melee and were blind to boot a rat has such a ridiculously low healthpool in any given limb that any direct hit will cripple, if not outright destroy a limb.

Ergo, IF you truly had your characters engage the rat, this would have happened in the WORST case:

Colonist #1 spots rat, misses all their shots. Engages in melee.
Rat nails every single hit they can land, dealing, assuming you were all naked except for wielding a weapon, ~2 damage per hit. Your colonist hits for, let's say 6dmg at 25% of the time.

Assuming ALL PERFECT hits on vital areas on your colonists, the rat would only manage to drop ONE colonist. The second colonist would always down the rat from pain shock threshold.

After the first guy was bitten by the rat, he started running and would not obey orders to move in a certain direction or attack the rat, with either the rifle or melee; there wasn't even an option to melee.
Finally the rat had him up against a wall and he stopped running and fired several times, missing every shot. The rat bit several times hitting every time.

When the first hunter was down and bleeding to death, I sent out another colonist to rescue the first guy and another colonist to Hunt the rat with the revolver; she too missed every shot and started running as soon as the rat bit her, ignoring all orders to move somewhere or attack the rat. So the rat kept biting her.

Round about here I just quit in disgust.

did you even draft?
or did you order hunt or something
never seen drafted people run, except with CE but that was from supression
rats dont do supression
their paws are not big enough to carry machineguns

I used Hunt.

pres r to draft
dont do combat with hunting
honestly dont even do hunting with hunting
when killing things micro is best so draft form a firingline and kill

your rat problem is now solved

I'm not sure I'll bother trying again.

You should. You are complaining about combat not working without entering combat mode.

slightly off topic but amen to that. hunt only when you know it's 1v1.

This happens with a lot of new players. They try to use hunt on things attacking them, which doesn't work. You have to press R to draft, and then you can move them around with right clicking and tell them what to tell/shoot. Without draft, they are unable to fight
