How to feed animals
I dont want my animals walking all through my home... So i have them in own area useing AREA zone. But now they die as no one brings them food. Am i missing some thing? I have hay grass pastures in their zone.

Is their a trough mod? some thing to keep animal feed good? I have the refrig mod but that wont let me add hay to it :-(

I cant really do hay in my biome so i make kibble and send it to a stockpile in their animal area.
Hmm that is idea. Only thing is im in hot biome so unless i freeze their barn it would rot. But it would work short term thank you.

1) Kibble won't rot.
2) Haygrass is a crop that should be harvested and then fed to animals. If you want them to graze give them area with wild grass. And make sure they are herbivores.

Allocating an animal area is one thing, but you ought to create a one or two cell stockpile within that area and set it to animal food only so that your haulers will bring food to feed your animals.

Don't forget to build a barn or something similar with a roof over it and put their sleeping spots inside. This will not only give them somewhere to sleep and be treated for wounds, it will be absolutely essential when a toxic fallout event occurs. Preparation is key ;)

make a barn for the animals, a building with animal beds and temperature control if you're feeling kind enough, put a stockpile down and assign kibble and hay to it, or you can use the fridge mod and install a single, double, or quad cell fridge in the barn and store food for the animals in there and they will use it - i build a quad cell fridge in my barns for hay and kibble.

if the animals are in a restricted zone and there are no food items in that restricted zone then they will starve, often if you use herbivores and they've eaten all the grass in the restricted zone they will starve so expand their allowed outwards zone, install the fast spreading grass mod to help with grass growing rates incase you have a high count of herbivores in your colony.

colonists assigned to Handling are the people that will feed your animals, I always assign any colonists passionate about animals to hunt and handle #1, tame and train #2, and to clean #3.

with my animals i make 2 zones, one which is inside their barn and or inside my inner defensive cloister for when a raid is under way, and a outward zone which excludes all of my inner cloister buildings and even my defensive walls and this zone is 80% of the map minus 25 tiles from the border incase of raiders.

Bah went to qoute and almost reported :-/ Need move that tab furture away lol
Any way... Yup this is kinda what i have. Thier area covers their personnal hay fields. As well as barn. Its on inside of base so already inside defenses. I have airconditioning for thier barns. Have 3. I lowerd it to like 50 inside so hay lasts a few quads. My people seem to care for them pretty decently. I looked at frig before and didnt see hay or kibble filter. Ill have to check again as i use normal stockpile zone 4 spots. so can have a stack of hay and kibble at least. Incase hay overloads. I added stock pile from above suggestions. The frig i thought didnt work so imma have to recheck. I turned off raids. they got rediculous fast on me. I like to build base first. Then once set up to size i want i add defenses. Which in this game doesnt work well lol

Also my colonists seem to ignore priority settings when do manual. But thank you for the responses. I had hoped for a feed trough which would of been.... more immersive lol. But this should work. Now to figure out how to use this comm and beacon to finially get space trader to show up so can get skydriller thing :-/

IIRC - Dandelions work better than haygrass for a pasture. Once the dandelions are grown, the animals can graze. I 100% recommend still having kibble or harvested hay for them to feed on, but the dandelions will help increase growing skill along with stagnating the animals need for alternate foods.

Dandelions can also spread on their own, for what its worth.

Try to make a barn like this, it'll be useful for when you get into some serious caravanning. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1404750205
