Components on the otherhand will mostly need to be crafted at a component assembly bench or bought.
As for making silver, I prefer to sell chemfuel, deep drilling will net you large amounts and it sells for a good amount per unit. You can also convert wood into it with a refinery if you have an excess amount.
Once you have a second (or more) base there is nothing to stop you caravanning your goods back to your main, but beware that it will give each base its own set of random events (so twice the raids if you have two bases).
When/if you're done with a base you can abandon it but it says that you can never return... I've never done this. Does anyone know if that means that hex is permanently no-go zone, or if you can set up a new base on that hex later and it will roll a new map for you...?
You'll want a decent number of beasts of burden to caravan the material back from that temporary base, and even if the timer runs out before you move it all, you can just load everything into an immobile caravan that will take its place on the world map. From there, you can merge other caravans with it on the same spot and shift the cargo around to keep moving it back to your base.
there are also semi balanced mods that allow you to drill for any specific metal, the rarer it is the more work it takes to mine up a lump of it. think its called deep core mining.
but there are options. and each presents its own challenge.
Crafting them is an even larger waste as the cost and time investment is obscene. This is something you set up as an emergency fallback, in case you run out of components during a time when you can't call in caravans.
Buying components off caravans is extremely cheap, and you can call in bulk goods traders on demand to buy dozens at a time.
Mining colonies are a thing really late game if you somehow run out of deep resources on your starting map, but it's more for deep drilling, not for mining trivial surface deposits.
Steel is very heavy so the best way to get it is that someone brings it to you. I make a lot of silver whit cloths, the good quality ones are very expensive and are ligth, so you can put a lot of shirts in a single mufalo. Im never short of steel or components until i begin to build the spaceship.
Also deep minning is a good way to get steel, but you need a lot of tech and infrastructure, is for late game.
Hope i helped.
