Mining base?
Hey folks,, absolutely love the game - ruining my performance at work - 3am work days are not good.

I have a question - since I am still a newbie.

I am running out of metal / coponents

I have raided (once) and dug some up then to bring back after the fight - so I get that.

But can you caravan to a different part of the map and then setup a small mining op? the game is telling me I can only have one base and cant see the terrain unless going into a battle.

Any tips.

Also what are your best tips to make silver? so I can buy more explody stuff from the passing trade ships.

thanks in Advance folks

in the settings you can chose to have more than one colony.

Once your surface veins run dry, deep drilling is your best bet, a single drill set on a 3x3 node of steel will give I believe 1200, and steel veins can usually fit something like 6 drills or so.

Components on the otherhand will mostly need to be crafted at a component assembly bench or bought.

As for making silver, I prefer to sell chemfuel, deep drilling will net you large amounts and it sells for a good amount per unit. You can also convert wood into it with a refinery if you have an excess amount.

You can adjust the number of active colonies but I believe they are all simulated together, so it can impact your game performance significantly especially if you play large maps.

Once you have a second (or more) base there is nothing to stop you caravanning your goods back to your main, but beware that it will give each base its own set of random events (so twice the raids if you have two bases).

When/if you're done with a base you can abandon it but it says that you can never return... I've never done this. Does anyone know if that means that hex is permanently no-go zone, or if you can set up a new base on that hex later and it will roll a new map for you...?

For making mining bases, you'll want to make and install a long range mineral scanner, which requires research. It will periodically (every 15 - 30 days depending on mods/vanilla) give you a location on the world map that you can travel to that has a lump of resources in the center. You can create a temporary mining base there, explore the surrounding rocks for steel and everything else, and use drills there as well.

You'll want a decent number of beasts of burden to caravan the material back from that temporary base, and even if the timer runs out before you move it all, you can just load everything into an immobile caravan that will take its place on the world map. From there, you can merge other caravans with it on the same spot and shift the cargo around to keep moving it back to your base.

yeah its always a good idea to set it up so you can run 2 colonies, it is a bit harder on the computer especially if the other map gets really developed, but if your just using a place to mine metal and ship it back to your main its worth it.

there are also semi balanced mods that allow you to drill for any specific metal, the rarer it is the more work it takes to mine up a lump of it. think its called deep core mining.

but there are options. and each presents its own challenge.

quarry mod is alright and its setup so if you think its default settings are too EZ mode you can make it more balanced for your setup.

Mining components is a waste of time, there's just never enough of them on any map to make it worthwhile. They help a little early game to get you going as tribal, but that is the extent of compacted machinary utility.

Crafting them is an even larger waste as the cost and time investment is obscene. This is something you set up as an emergency fallback, in case you run out of components during a time when you can't call in caravans.

Buying components off caravans is extremely cheap, and you can call in bulk goods traders on demand to buy dozens at a time.

Mining colonies are a thing really late game if you somehow run out of deep resources on your starting map, but it's more for deep drilling, not for mining trivial surface deposits.

For the components i scrap the mechanoids and sometimes i make a caravan to wander for encounter maps. Is a good way to get a lot of components and other minerals like gold or jade.
Steel is very heavy so the best way to get it is that someone brings it to you. I make a lot of silver whit cloths, the good quality ones are very expensive and are ligth, so you can put a lot of shirts in a single mufalo. Im never short of steel or components until i begin to build the spaceship.
Also deep minning is a good way to get steel, but you need a lot of tech and infrastructure, is for late game.
Hope i helped.
