Is it safe to live in caves yet..?
Took a hiatus of a few months. I love building bases in caves, but the last time I did that I got whooped by the bug infestations (RIP first colony.) Haven't built insides caves ever since.

Considering doing it, but want to see if anyone will ward me off from doing it lol.

you can still build in them but just have a bit more space in ur tunnels so if u do get an infestation you have room to shoot and also defend.

Hwelll no! lol. JK. When I started out I would choose hilly areas and make my own caves for my whole base. Slow work but much safer than being out in the open. :)
Maybe I should go back to it. lol

I have been tying that for almost a whole game year and I have yet to see a infestation. Am I missing somthing?

They spawn a lot less often and one decent pawn with good gear can solo a hive or two. Basically it lowers their hp a ton which makes the process more bearable when they spawn a couple dozen hives late game.

aside from the mod, when you start the game you can edit the scenario and disable any event including infestations.

My advice if you want to make a mountain base is to use what I like to call "The Stalingrad" strategy, EVERY ROOM A FORTRESS! Airlocks, reinforced walls, turrets in the corridors, maybe some deadfall traps. Basically make it so if a infestation spawns it can be sealed off and contained long enough to deal with it properly.

Do not do this, unless you're fine with horrible efficiency.

It's not that bad if you have a lot of time and resources + simple mod for smart switches. Enemy sensor switch allows to eneable turrets only when there's enemies nearby. Mod that allows to cross wires also helps with infrastructure. So you actually can make quite efficient base. You also can make it on normal switches, too. But it's a lot of micromanagment :)

You can also guide the infestations to form where you want them. I keep my base BRIGHT and have a special kill room that's dark and full of flammable things (wood floors, carpet, power lines, etc). Just make sure your kill room is enforced so that burning bugs don't burst into your main living quarters. Not that that's ever happened to me.....

Not resource efficency. Time efficency.

I didn't know light affected their spawn. For your kill room, I wonder if you could have vents sending in hot air until they burn to death. I considered this for a prison complex once.
