Extreme Desert is no joke
Slid the slider all the way to HOT and rain fall to none.... welcome to hell.

Took a spot in the south where winter is +75C. Its so hot there's not a single living thing on the map. Cactus.... DEAD. MEGASPIDERs... DEAD even inside their slightly cooler caves they die after 48 hrs from heatstroke. I'm bottled up in a cave and can only go outside for very very brief moments or I will drop from heatstroke. My biggest challenge after getting temp controls and food stocks up.... seems to be wood supply. There is no wood on the map. I build with stone only cause I need to save that wood for the few things that require it... like the initial research bench.

On the plus side.... raids are not an issue. I took a large size map and by the time the guys get to my cave... they are already in the early heatstroke stages. All I got to do is throw some sand bags down to slow their pace and they'll die before they reach my door.

I need to make a panic / cool room with food not attached to my main base though. I just know the game is gonna mess with me and send an insect infestation.... I'll just shut my power grid off and hide in the panic room while they all die from heat lol

The initial research bench can be made with steel or stone. You just need have to have some of the material on hand for it to be an option.

If you got enough power you could grow trees indoors.

um...there will be raids... and while it does stop pirates and whatnot eventually the story teller will "wisen up" and send only robots to raid you...

Also make dusters... they can be worn over clothes and protect against heat just like cowboy hats.

I got a few palm trees growing now. The gravel is 70% fertile, I think at this rate it will take almost half a year to get wood. I'll probably have to buy from orbital traders.

This.

Mechanoids aren't allowed to spawn before like day 35 or so, and human raiders aren't allowed to spawn in temps above 40C. So early game nothing is allowed to spawn so the game force spawns human raids that just die, but after day 35 you will constantly get mechanoid raids, and only mechanoid raids, forever.

Dusters turn even the hottest maps into basically normal maps where you just need to spend a lot of extra power to grow food. It's kind of disappointing how little extreme temps effect the gameplay these days.

The flaw in my plan revealed... mechanoids... no way I'm capable of fighting them off yet. im rushing gun turrets... but even still....

I see what you mean with the dusters, wow. A drop pod with alpacca wool dropped and I was able to craft 2 dusters, they increased my temp range by +/- 40C thats huge.

For the record... devil strand gives the best defense(piercing and blunt) while muffaloes give the best temperature defense(300% more resistance)

Oh yes i almost forgot... Jackets might be a bit better for you... i think they give more resistance to heat but no protection from cold(i mean...your in an extreme desert does it get cold at night?)... im just so used to dusters though so they are my go to thing.

Jackets don't give any protection to hot temperatures, and very little protection to cold temps. They are terrible and never worth making on any map. Dusters have both hot and cold protection, they are ideal for most maps.

I want to say that in the context of Diemx's game you would be right to assume that all extreme deserts are hot, but on a normal map the desert biome has the biggest fluctuations in temperature. So you can get a cold extreme desert biome.

Seriously, next time you load up a normal map just take a gander around your arctic circle areas on the map. There should be some desert tiles next to the tundra and boreal ones. I doubt it reaches as far as the ice sheet and sea ice biomes but it is possible. Especially when mountain ranges are able to jack up the elevation and altitude on the map.

A caravan showed up loaded with stuffs. I bought a few things, too bad they didnt have wood. Anyhow they left due to extreme temperatures.... more than half of them died before they could exit the map and 3 muffalos died. Took me 4 days running back and forth gathering all the goodies that dropped.

But like was previously mentioned... the story teller has started sending mechanoids. I survived two raids barely. The issue I'm having now is that they use ranged weapons and they stay outside the range of my turrets. I have to try and lure them in, its not easy.

I'm going to try and wall up the passes and leave only a natural cave route as the only way in to my base. I'll put turrets at the corners, hopefully they will path in and come around into range.

Make a wall at the outer edge of your turrets range or 2 tiles in from your turrets range. This way enemies cannot fire on your turrets without getting fired upon in return.
Bigfootstoe Feb 1, 2018 @ 8:44am
After day 40 storytelling will only send mechaniods of the raiders cannot survive
