0_o How much power does a winter grow room take...?
So...Apparently four solar panels and two wind turbines aren't enough to keep a heater, sun lamp and even one hydroponics bay running. The batteries all just start draining like nobody's business.

If I hadn't had that one half-potato harvest at the end of falltime giving me a ton of crops, I'd be completely boned. As it is I don't know if my food supply will last me to the end of Decembruary.

Sun lamps require 2,900 watts, heaters requires 200 Watts, and hydroponics cost quiet a lot. you can find out more about the watts cost if you click the "I" icon when you select the heater, sun lamp ect (I believe). If that doesn't work go to the furniture menu and see if the "I" is there.

I'd build geothermal generators since they produce a lot of power but if that isn't possible i'd just spam a bunch of wind turbines (2) and solar pannels (6) in an walled up area (unroofed of course).

18 watts when idle. I think it's 200 when in use.

Depends on the map. Two solars is enough on most maps for a single sunlamp grow room. You shouldn't be using hydroponics unless there is no other option or you have lots of excess power and resources. Have to also factor in map conditions and globe position to determine how much sun the map gets per day, on some maps solar panels are almost completely useless in winter because they get so little sun (but in summer the solars run all night).

This is my electrical setup (the gap in the panels were panels that got wrecked by raiders)

All hydro bays are shut off, except one, and power was juuuuust barely working if I toggled the furnace off during the daylight hours.

I can't help but think I really screwed up my battery placement or something for this not to work out.

(Growing circle of crops is also only a half-circle because half the ground is rocks and not dirt. Bad planning on my part.)

Can't really tell much about your power system in that screen because you don't have the wire overlay up. Make sure the solar panels are connected to the power system, maybe your connection to them was at the missing panel or something. Placement of betteries doesn't matter as long as they are connected and aren't in the rain.

Deconstruct all of those hydroponics and move the sunlamp into the middle of the room. Then work on building a better room somewhere with more dirt. Being completely out of food though you will probably have to eat some people before you can get your food restabilized.

Ah, this is the game I choose to waste my time with.

ignoring the power issues u are wasting alot of the sunlamps light area with walls

They all received at least some charge at some point. I saw the meters on them fill up a bit day to day.

Yeah, given I'm out of food, can't figure out how to cannibalize those raiders and have several people with serious disfigurements and one in a permanent coma due to a bullet to the brain...I've pretty much written off this run of the game. XD

Yeah, you should really lay out hydroponic rooms like this:

Ignore the mod link, it's just the picture I'm showing.

In total it's 4,580 watts, plus an extra 700 if the 4 heaters are on.
2,900 on the Sun Lamp (averages 1,450 per day)
1,680 for the Hydroponics, permanently. (70 each)
And 175 per heater on high power usage.

I have ~8 or 9 solar panels set up with a hydrothermal generator and it's still not enough to keep my base fully powerd through the ngiht (can't fill up batteries). You need *a lot* for sunlamps on top of that.
Emmote Jan 22, 2018 @ 5:53pm
Wind turbines offer a lot of power too and take up very little space, you should always have a few around. They can help generate power at night too.

Though, I tend to just use advanced power mods to save space.

So if I wanted a ghetto grow room and don't have hydroponics or tech, can I just grow plants inside with lights and heaters?

Has to be a Sun Lamp, regular lights won't work. But beyond that, yes, that is the way it is done except in the case of having no soil to grow in.

So long as there's fetile soil to plant in, yes.

That was part of my problem.

I've now got an internal grow room (with soil all around the sun lamp) set up in advance for next winter (I managed to survive my situation because of a few miracle visits from muffallo herds and one guy going nuts and butchering the pet dog. :( )

And I've just got Geothermal researched, so hopefully this helps my winter power situation.
