Is there a guide about how these things work? How to set them up, whats efficent for them etc.

Ive tried to read this stuff elsewhere but it doesnt help and just confuses me more. I find the player made guides much more easier to understand. I only grow 3 plants although one is always changing. I grow Rice, Cotton and these 3 are always changing - Corn, Healroot and Devilstrand.

I appreciate any help that is given.

Put down a solar lamp, arrange your hydroponics gardens so that they all fit that pattern, everything else is cheese as long as you have decent power output. Solar Flare will most likely kill your crops as there is nothing you can do.

Some people leave gaps so pawns can rush in and harvest what they can. But if you disabled the solar flare and maybe pzzt events, you could really pack it in. I thought devilstrand is removed from the list of growable things on those hydro tables? Healroot is still in there, though.

Devilstrand isn't there if you are using vanilla but he may be using mods.

I only play vanilla for now. I was just telling the plants that I was growing, just on normal soil. If a solar flare happens I wont be to mad I have so much food anyway. I have good power, 4 batteries connected to 3 solar panels, then up north I am using one of those geysers for power and that thing does the job.

Well, I can kill two birds with one stone here.
Both link my mod that allows Devilstrand in Hydroponics, and also one of the most efficient layouts of Hydroponics, from the image it uses.

Colonists can walk over Hydroponic basins, so you can really pack them in tightly.

One small random thing I would like to add (that I have only very recently discovered) is that hydroponics are vulnerable to Poison Ship creep, which for some reason I assumed they weren't.
