Perhaps someone knows a mod for removing overhead mountain so that you can demolish the mountain safely. Maybe a search on the workshop for overhead mountain will get a result.
This is the mod i personally used for removing mountain tops in some earlier playthroughs. After finishing, you still have to use "remove roof area" on the part that has been removed. enjoy
This^
If you want a visual example, place a single wall in the middle of no where with a biiiig square roof around it. You can then see where the pawns build for the exact size a single wall can hold.
Keep in mind that tiles mined out under a thick mountain roof can cause infestations to spawn, too.
Myself, I prefer the one on the left - less disastrous if a pillar gets destroyed. I use that for open areas when building within a mountain. You can space them out further, but the one on the left just results in a single ceiling piece dropping of one pillar is removed.
Since your plan is to remove the entire mountain though, I would remove the roof completely (as Preechr mentioned, to prevent infestations). But to do that, you need a mod as everyone else has mentioned lol.
