I use them as a reference point to the resolution of a sprite needed for certain stuff. It's also good for creating clothing as you can see the shape and everything.
Shading is easy as well. You can select a paintbrush, choose the black color and change the opacity to something under 70%. Depends how strong you want your shading to be. Now just simply draw over the parts you want darker. To lighten some parts you have to do the same, except with white color instead of black.
