making sprites for a mod?
I've learned some basic modding but I have troubles with sprites, I simply have no idea how to start an at least adequate looking sprite, are there any guides or maybe software for that?

I recommend using Gimp. It's free and good for this kind of stuff.
Of course you can use any other tool, it just needs to have an ability to make the background transparent

Here are rimworld's textures:
https://github.com/RimworldModders/rimworld-assets

I use them as a reference point to the resolution of a sprite needed for certain stuff. It's also good for creating clothing as you can see the shape and everything.
I use gimp, but is there any way to do shading or outlines for example, any shader to do that?
Outlines are very easy. Just use the magic wand tool, click on the background. It will select the outline of your texture. Now, I believe it was in the Edit tab. There should be a button for drawing over selection. Note: I recommend inverting the selection (selection tab at the top, click invert) so it won't add an outline to borders of the whole image. I'm using a different language than english in gimp so some things can be off.
Shading is easy as well. You can select a paintbrush, choose the black color and change the opacity to something under 70%. Depends how strong you want your shading to be. Now just simply draw over the parts you want darker. To lighten some parts you have to do the same, except with white color instead of black.

Gimp also has the drop shadow filter that's very easy to use once you figure it out.

Google: "making sprites in gimp" and there's tons of help for you.
